1. General way to apply for a passport.

The general way to apply for a passport especially for Nigerian applicants on the Nigerian Passport Application portal are:

A. You start by visiting the Nigeria Immigration Portal’s homepage.

B. Find and click on the appropriate application form:

  • If you’re applying for an e-Passport, choose the e-Passport Application Form.
  • If you’re applying for an MRP Passport, select the MRP Passport Application Form (if applicable).

C. Choose the type of passport you need: either a Standard e-Passport or an Official e-Passport, then click “Start Application.”

D. Fill out the application form completely and carefully. Make sure to tick the box confirming your responsibility for the provided information.

E. Once the form is filled, click the “PRINT” button to get a copy of the filled form.

F. Click on ‘Submit Application’ to proceed to the Applicant details page.

G. Next, click on “Proceed to Online Payment.”

H. Choose whether you want to pay in Naira or US Dollars.

I. If paying in Naira, select your preferred payment method: either through a bank or with a Credit/Debit card.

  • If paying at a bank, select “Bank” and continue.
  •  If using a Credit/Debit card, select the appropriate option and log in.

J. After payment, ensure you receive an approved payment platform provider receipt containing a Validation Number.

Once you’ve paid, get your “Validation Number” and head to the NIS website to check your payment

  • Go to “Check Payment Status” and enter your Passport Application ID and Reference Number.

  • Click “Search Record” and you’ll see your interview date on the “Applicant’s Details” page.
  • Print your Receipt or Acknowledgement Slip using the buttons on the page (you’ll need them for your interview).
  • Your NIS e-receipt or Acknowledgement Slip will appear in a new window. Click “Print” to get a copy.

How to use the Nigerian Passport Application portal for Foreign applicants

If you’re paying from outside Nigeria, your payment will be in US Dollars. You’ll need to use an approved payment platform to finish your application and pay in USD. 

After you’ve paid, you can go for your interview with all the required documents. Remember, you can only access your interview schedule, final e-receipt, and acknowledgment slip using your Validation Number.

To print your payment receipt:

1. Go to the portal homepage and click on ‘Query your application payment status.’

2. Select ‘Passport’ as your application type.

3. Enter your Application ID, Reference Number, and Validation Number if you have one.

4. Submit the details.

5. Your application details will be shown.

6. Scroll down and click on ‘Print receipt.’

7. Your payment receipt will appear in a new window.

8. Click on ‘Print this receipt’ to print it out.

To get your Passport Guarantor’s Form:

  • Visit the Nigeria Immigration Service homepage.
  • Enter the reference and ID numbers from your acknowledgment slip.
  • Click ‘Print’ to print the first page, then click ‘Next’ to print the second page (you’ll still need to click the Print button).
