How to Unblock Websites in 12 Easy Ways: 2024 Step-by-Step Guide.

October 8, 2024

Chike, the new Industrial Training Student posted to our school recently, asked Mr Uchendu, “How can I unblock websites?”

It was such a straightforward question that I was so keen on what the answers might be.

Many people face restrictions online, whether it’s at school, at work, or because of government regulations. These restrictions can be frustrating, especially when accessing useful or important information.

Fortunately, learning how to unblock blocked websites can provide various ways to bypass these restrictions and help you access the information you need without trouble.

Whether you are trying to access social media, streaming platforms, or important information, these methods will help you.

In this article, we’ll discuss twelve simple ways to unblock websites or access blocked websites. We’ll also explain each method in easy steps that are suitable even for those with little technical knowledge.

Why Are Websites Blocked?

Before we look at the ways to unblock a website, it’s helpful to understand why websites might be blocked in the first place.

Below are some common reasons:

  • Censorship:

Governments in some countries block specific websites that they consider inappropriate or politically sensitive.

  • Workplace or School Policies:

Employers and schools may block websites like social media to prevent distractions and maintain productivity.

  • Geo-Restrictions:

Streaming services like Netflix or Hulu may have content restricted to certain regions due to licensing agreements.

  • Network Restrictions:

Public networks, such as those in cafes or libraries, often have blocks to prevent access to inappropriate content.

With an understanding of why websites are blocked, you can now decide which Unblocking method is most suitable for you.

How to Unblock Websites in 12 Easy Ways.

Unblocking websites is essential for accessing global information, especially in today’s connected world.

Whether you’re trying to access social media, streaming platforms, or simply a blog blocked in your region, below are the 12 easy ways to unblock websites and regain control of your browsing experience.

1.Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network)

One of the most effective and secure ways to unblock websites is by using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

A VPN hides your IP address and encrypts your internet traffic, allowing you to appear to be browsing from a different location.

To make use of a VPN, simply:

  • Choose a Reliable VPN:

There are many VPN services to choose from. Some of the most trusted options include Surfshark, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN.

  • Download and Install the VPN:

Go to the VPN provider’s website, download the software for your device (PC, mobile, etc.), and follow the installation steps.

  • Select a Server Location:

Once the VPN is set up, open the app and choose a server in a country where the website you’re trying to access isn’t blocked.

  • Connect to the Server:

After selecting the server, click “Connect.”

You will then be connected to a server in a country where the website you want to access is not blocked.

The VPN will hide your IP and encrypt your data.

  • Access the Website:

Now, you can freely browse the previously blocked site without any restrictions.

The Pros and Cons of making use of a VPN:

  1. VPNs encrypt your data, providing enhanced privacy.
  2. They can also help bypass ISP throttling, improving your browsing speeds.
  3. Quality VPNs require a subscription.
  4. While free VPNs are available, they often have data limits and can be unreliable.

2. Use a Proxy Website

A proxy website works similarly to a VPN but doesn’t require downloading software. It acts as an intermediary between your browser and the blocked website, allowing you to bypass restrictions.

Proxies are often faster to set up but provide less security than VPNs.

To use a proxy website, do the following:

  • Search for a Reliable Proxy Website:

You can use websites like Hide.me, KProxy, or ProxySite.com. All of them are good options.

  • Enter the Website URL:

Once on the proxy website, type the URL of the blocked site you wish to access in the provided search box.

  • Browse Anonymously:

The proxy server will load the content for you, allowing you to access blocked websites without issues.

While a proxy website is easy to use, it doesn’t offer the same encryption as a VPN, so it’s less secure. It’s still a good option for quick access to blocked content when privacy isn’t your top concern.

The pros and cons of using a proxy website:

  1. You don’t need to download any software.
  2. It’s often a quick and simple solution.
  3. Proxies may not offer encryption, leaving your data vulnerable.
  4. Many proxy servers have slow connection speeds and ads.

3. Use Browser Extensions

Browser extensions can also help unblock websites by rerouting your connection through alternative servers or locations.

They are simple tools you add to your web browser, allowing you to bypass blocks without much hassle.

Some popular extensions include Hola, ZenMate, and Browsec.

Below are steps to follow to set up a browser extension on your device:

  • Go to Your Browser’s Extension Store:

For Chrome users, head to the Chrome Web Store. For Firefox, go to Firefox Add-ons.

  • Search for Extensions:

Look for extensions like Hola or ZenMate that are specifically designed to unblock content.

  • Install the Extension:

Click “Add to Chrome” or “Add to Firefox” to install the extension.

  • Activate the Extension:

Open the extension from your browser toolbar, select a server location, and activate it to start unblocking websites.

  • Browse Unrestricted:

You can now visit blocked websites without any issues.

The advantages and disadvantages of using a browser extension:

  1. Quick access to different servers without leaving your browser.
  2. Most extensions have free versions with basic features.
  3. Some extensions are not secure, and they may log your data.
  4. Extensions can also slow down your browser.

4. Use the Tor Browser

The Tor browser is a specialized browser designed to help users access blocked websites anonymously.

It uses a decentralized network of volunteer servers that routes your internet traffic through different points, making it difficult for anyone to track your online activity.

To make use of Tor, follow these steps:

  • Download the Tor Browser:

Visit the official Tor Project website (torproject.org) and download the browser for your operating system.

  • Install Tor:

Follow the installation instructions for your device to install the Tor

  • Open the Tor Browser:

Launch the Tor browser just like any other web browser.

  • Start Browsing Anonymously:

You can now access websites that might be blocked on other browsers. The Tor browser provides strong anonymity, ensuring your online activity is hidden from prying eyes.

Tor is an excellent choice if you need more privacy while browsing blocked websites. However, it may slow your browsing experience since your connection is routed through multiple servers.

The pros and cons of using Tor Browser:

  1. Provides strong anonymity and privacy.
  2. Tor can also help bypass deep packet inspection (DPI) filters that VPNs might struggle with.
  3. Browsing speeds are usually slower compared to regular browsers.
  4. Some websites block Tor connections.

5. Use Google Translate

You might not expect it, but Google Translate can be used as a workaround to unblock websites.

It works by translating blocked websites, which often allows you to bypass restrictions since Google Translate acts as a proxy.

To make use of this, simply:

  • Open Google Translate:

Go to translate.google.com.

  • Enter the Website’s URL:

Paste the URL of the blocked website into the translation box.

  • Select a Language:

Choose a language to translate the website into (it can even be the same language).

  • Click the Translated Link:

Google Translate will provide a clickable URL version, often allowing you to bypass blocks.

While Google Translate isn’t a foolproof solution, it’s a handy trick for unblocking websites quickly without needing additional software.

Advantages and disadvantages of using Google Translate:

  1. It’s a creative and easy method that requires no installation.
  2. It works well for sites that are blocked due to simple URL filters.
  3. This method may not work for complex or secure websites.
  4. Formatting might appear odd since the page is served through Google.

6. Change Network Proxy Settings.

Another method to unblock websites is by manually changing your device’s proxy settings.

A proxy server functions similarly to a VPN, allowing you to bypass network restrictions by routing your connection through a different location.

To change your proxy settings:

  • Go to Network Settings:

Open your device’s network settings (in Windows, go to “Control Panel” > “Network and Internet”).

  • Change Proxy Settings:

Find the option to change your proxy server. You will need a public proxy address (you can find free ones online).

  • Enter the Proxy Address:

Copy and paste the public proxy address into the proxy settings field.

  • Save and Browse:

Once you’ve saved the new settings, try accessing the blocked site.

Changing proxy settings is a more manual approach but can be useful when VPNs or proxies aren’t working.

The pros and cons of changing proxy settings manually:

  1. It directly routes your connection through a different server.
  2. There will be more control over which proxy you’re using.
  3. It requires manual setup, which can be challenging for some users.
  4. Public proxies may be unreliable and insecure.

7. Use IP Address Instead of URL

Some website blocks are applied based on the domain name (the URL).

Using the website’s IP address instead of its URL can help you bypass the restriction.

Every website has an IP address that can be used to access it directly.

Here’s how to go about it:

  • Find The Website’s IP address:

You can find the IP address of a website by using a command prompt tool.

In Windows, open “Command Prompt” and type “ping www.website.com”. This will return the site’s IP address.

  • Enter the IP Address in the Browser:

Instead of typing the URL into the address bar, type the IP address and press enter.

For example, you might see an address like “192.168.1.1” which you can paste into your browser’s address bar.

  • Browse the Website:

If the block was only applied to the domain, this trick should help you bypass it.

This method works best for simple domain blocks but won’t work if the network restricts the entire IP address.

Advantages and disadvantages of using IP address instead of URL:

  1. It’s a quick method to try, especially for simple blocks.
  2. No software or downloads are required.
  3. Some sites may use shared hosting, meaning multiple websites share the same IP, which can lead to confusion.
  4. More advanced blocking techniques may still prevent access.

8. Use the Website’s Mobile Version.

In some cases, network filters only block the desktop version of a website, allowing the mobile version to remain accessible. By switching to the mobile version of the site, you may be able to bypass the restriction.

To do this, follow these steps:

  • Use the Mobile URL:

Try typing the URL as you would for a mobile version, such as “m.website.com” or “mobile.website.com.”

  • Access the Mobile Site:

If the desktop version is blocked but the mobile version isn’t, you should be able to access the site without problems.

Pros and Cons of using the website’s mobile version:

  1. It’s a very simple solution that doesn’t require any additional tools.
  2. It works well on devices with small screens.
  3. Not all websites have mobile versions available.
  4. The mobile version may not have the full functionality of the desktop site.

9. Use a Different DNS

Some website blocks occur at the DNS (Domain Name System) level.

Changing your DNS settings to a public DNS can help you access blocked websites.

Follow these steps to achieve this:

  • Go to Your DNS Settings:

Open the network settings on your device and look for the DNS configuration.

  • Change to a Public DNS:

Use a public DNS server like Google’s (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).

  • Save Settings:

After changing the DNS server, save the settings and try accessing the blocked website.

Changing DNS settings can be a more permanent solution for bypassing network-level blocks, making it ideal for users who need constant access to restricted sites.

Advantages and disadvantages of changing DNS settings:

  1. It’s a very simple solution that doesn’t require any additional tools.
  2. It works well on devices with small screens.
  3. Not all websites have mobile versions available.
  4. The mobile version may not have the full functionality of the desktop site.

10. Use RSS Feed.

If the website you are trying to access offers an RSS feed, you can receive updates and read content without directly visiting it.

This method works well for websites that publish articles or news regularly.

To do this, follow these steps:

  • Find the Website’s RSS Feed:

Many websites offer RSS feeds. Look for the RSS symbol (often orange) or search for “RSS feed” on the site.

  • Subscribe to the Feed:

Use an RSS reader like Feedly or RSSOwl to subscribe to the feed.

  • Receive Updates:

Once subscribed, you will receive content updates directly to your RSS reader without visiting the website.

While this method doesn’t provide access to the entire website, it’s a good workaround for accessing the most recent content.

11. Shorten the URL

Some network filters block websites based on the full URL. In such cases, using a URL shortener can sometimes bypass the restrictions.

URL shorteners create a new link that redirects to the original website.

To do this,

  • Use a URL Shortening Service:

Visit a website like Bitly (bitly.com) or TinyURL (tinyurl.com).

  • Shorten the Blocked URL:

Paste the URL of the blocked website into the shortener and create a new link.

  • Use the Shortened URL:

Copy the shortened URL and paste it into your browser’s address bar.

The shortened link may bypass network filters and allow you to access the website.

Although this method doesn’t work for all blocks, it’s a quick and simple way to test if a website’s domain is blocked by a filter based on its URL.

12. Use HTTPS Instead of HTTP.

Sometimes, only the unsecured HTTP version of a website is blocked, while the secured HTTPS version is still accessible.

HTTPS adds an extra layer of security to the website, and network filters may not block it.

Follow these steps:

  • Modify the URL:

If the website URL starts with “http://,” change it to “https://.”

  • Try Accessing the Website:

After making the change, hit enter. If the website has an HTTPS version, this small adjustment might help you bypass the block.

Switching to HTTPS is also a safer way to browse, as it encrypts your data and offers additional security.

This method can work for sites that offer both HTTP and HTTPS access.
