In this post, we’ll be looking into the journey of Glovo, exploring its beginnings, unique features, challenges, and impact on the food delivery landscape.

What is Glovo?

Glovo is an app created in Spain by Oscar Pierre and Sacha Michaud in 2014, with its launch happening in 2015 after receiving initial funding. Since then, the company has gathered $1.0B through seven rounds of funding. Since mid-2022, Glovo has been a part of the Delivery Hero Group, a publicly traded German company.

In 2021, Glovo operated in 25 countries and more than 1,500 cities. The Glovo app had monthly usage from over 170,000 active partners and 61,000 active couriers.

Originally starting in 2015 as a small delivery service in Barcelona, Spain, Glovo aimed to provide a convenient solution for city dwellers to receive deliveries quickly. The idea quickly gained traction, leading to investment and expansion beyond Spain.

Glovo’s business model revolves around a mobile app that connects users with local couriers, or “Glovers,” who pick up and deliver orders from restaurants, grocery stores, pharmacies, and other retailers.

What are Glovo’s Philanthropic works?

The company has been doing some really amazing stuff to help others. They set up something called The Impact Fund in March 2023. Basically, every time someone orders something through the Glovoapp, a little bit of money goes into this fund. They hope to gather €5 million by the end of 2023 with this fund.

And what’s cool is that this money goes towards projects that make good things happen, like helping local communities, fighting climate change, and teaching small businesses how to use technology. They’ve been supporting these projects since 2021.

When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Glovo had to stop working there because it wasn’t safe. But less than a week later, they started up again in 20 cities, but in a limited way. They wanted to help the people affected by the war.

In just the first week of March, its delivery workers in Ukraine did 10,000 deliveries using the Glovo app. They didn’t keep any of the money they earned from these deliveries. Nope, they gave it all to partners, non-profit groups, and pharmacies to help out.

It even added special features to their app to support Ukraine’s armed forces. Plus, they donated money to organizations like the Red Cross to help people all over Ukraine.

Since the war started, The company has used something called Glovo Access to do even more good stuff. They’ve provided over 114,000 meals to people in need, saved 54,000 kilograms of food from being wasted, and given away 1,300 meals through Glovo Cook Rooms. So, yeah, Glovo’s been doing some pretty awesome stuff to make the world a better place.
