Safaricom Launches Pay-As-You-Go Internet Pricing Model in Kenya

Safaricom launches Pay-As-You-Go in Kenya, bringing a fresh way for homes and offices to access fast fibre internet without big monthly bills. The Kenyan-based telecoms operator Safaricom is set to launch a pay-as-you-go fibre broadband service. This new model lets people buy the internet in small, affordable packages, just like topping up mobile phone credit. It’s a smart move to help families and businesses who find standard monthly plans too expensive or not fitting their needs.

Many households in Kenya struggle with fixed costs for the internet. This launch in Kenya aims to fix this by offering daily, weekly, or monthly options. This mirrors the company’s huge success with mobile data bundles, which serve over 50 million users. Right now, Safaricom has between 400,000 and 500,000 fixed fibre customers, a small number compared to mobiles. The goal is bold: grow this to 4 million homes in the coming years and triple Kenya’s fixed broadband market over five years.

To lead this push, Safaricom has appointed Sylvia Anampiu as Director of Fixed Business. She started on January 5th and will drive strategy, growth, and profits across home and business fibre services. Anampiu aims to lower entry costs for families outside rich areas. She will also bundle fibre with ICT, cloud, and IoT services for small and medium businesses, which often lack good options. Before joining, she was managing director at Bayobab Kenya, part of MTN Group, where she expanded fibre networks. She has also led at Airtel Africa, Orange Kenya, and Bayer East Africa, strong experience for this role, building on initiatives like Safaricom’s technician training programs.

Safaricom launches Pay-As-You-Go in Kenya

Safaricom launches Pay-As-You-Go in Kenya as a core part of its growth plan. CEO Peter Ndegwa says it’s like transforming mobile data years ago. “We want to change fixed services with flexible pricing,” he explained. This expands access while controlling costs. Today, only about 1.2 million Kenyans have fixed broadband, but the real chance is 4 million. That means roughly 3 million people still need connecting. Ndegwa sees the market growing 50% yearly, mixing fibre, 5G fixed wireless, and cheaper devices.

The pay-as-you-go fibre lets users buy time-based bundles, no long commitments. For example, pay for a day or week of internet, perfect for light users or tight budgets. Safaricom launches Pay-As-You-Go in Kenya to make broadband as easy as mobile top-ups. In the second half of its financial year (October to March), the company plans tokenised Wi-Fi access too. This tightens links across consumer, business, and public sector services for better quality internet.

This initiative positions pay-as-you-go fibre broadband as central to Safaricom’s growth. It helps more Kenyans join the digital world, work from home, learn online, or run small shops. Businesses get reliable connectivity bundled with tools they need. By shifting from rigid monthly plans, Safaricom opens doors for underserved areas. The flexible model could spark wider internet use, boosting Kenya’s economy through better access to education, health info, and markets.

With rising demand for home offices and online everything, affordable fibre matters. The company’s mobile strength gives it an edge to scale fast. Under Anampiu and Ndegwa, expect quicker rollout, more partnerships, and tech mixes like 5G. This isn’t just a product, it’s a step to connect millions, grow the market, and secure Safaricom’s future.
