Safaricom Kenya Denies Cancelling Payment for Starlink

Safaricom, a popular telecommunications service provider, has refuted claims it has canceled the payment of Starlink Internet Services through its mobile money platform, M-PESA

This comes after netizens called out the telecommunication company for canceling the satellite internet payments through the popular Mpesa service on X.

However, Safaricom responded, saying the option was still available.and urged Kenyans facing challenges to reach out to the company.

Starlink, which was introduced into the Kenyan market in July 2023, offers high speed and coverage to remote areas where local internet service providers may not reach. It has been widely accepted in the country, especially with the recent Starlink’s kit introduced.

Safaricom Calls For Regulatory Control Over Satellite Internet Services

The SpaceX innovation relies on satellites, unlike Safaricom’s internet, which uses undersea cables that have previously been destroyed, causing internet outages.

However, Safaricom recommended that the Communication Authority should evaluate potential risks and mandate that satellite internet services be offered under the auspices of a locally licensed entity, thereby ensuring regulatory control and accountability. 

The telco company has the interest of the country at heart and is ensuring that people’s data are protected.
