Nigeria Launches First Multilingual LLM

Nigeria has made significant progress in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by introducing its first multilingual Large Language Model (LLM).

The announcement was made on April 19th by Communications Minister Dr. Bosun Tijani, signaling a crucial milestone in Nigeria’s goal to lead AI development in Africa.

The LLM launch coincided with the conclusion of a four-day intensive AI workshop in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Over 120 AI experts participated in shaping Nigeria’s National AI Strategy, which will guide the country’s future AI research, development, and implementation efforts.

Collaborative Effort Ushers in Multilingual Innovation

The creation of the LLM was a joint effort involving local AI firm Awarritech, global tech company DataDotOrg, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Centre for AI and Robotics (NCAIR).

Their collaboration highlights Nigeria’s dedication to building a strong AI community that utilizes both local and global expertise.

Focus on Under-Represented Languages

Nigeria’s LLM stands out for its ability to understand multiple languages.

It is being trained on a special dataset that includes five lesser-known languages in addition to English.

This emphasis on languages that are often overlooked is important for making sure AI solutions are available to everyone.

By including these languages, the LLM can reach more people in Nigeria and meet the unique requirements of different groups.

LLM to Empower Future AI Solutions

The potential of this LLM is very promising. Its capability to comprehend, analyze, and produce text in different languages will enable developers to design AI solutions that are better suited to the Nigerian environment.

These innovations could greatly benefit sectors like education, healthcare, agriculture, and finance.

Minister Tijani Expresses Optimism

Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Communications Minister of Nigeria, shared his positive outlook on the LLM and the National AI Strategy.

He emphasized the program’s ability to transform AI solutions not just in Nigeria, but throughout the continent.

Dr. Tijani also revealed the reopening of the National Centre for AI and Robotics (NCAIR) in partnership with Cisco, a top cybersecurity company.

This reopening demonstrates Nigeria’s dedication to cultivating a strong research ecosystem to advance the country’s AI initiatives.
