Kenya has made a significant move in making use of the transformational power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by declaring that it will work on developing an all-inclusive National AI Strategy.
This initiative, which was launched on April 8, 2024, in partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), also known as German Corporation for International Cooperation, signifies a turning point in the country’s technological history.
The project shows the country’s desire to be a pioneer in Africa in using AI responsibly.
Through the development of a well-elaborated National AI Strategy, Kenya targets at utilizing this powerful tool for sustainable development and social inclusion across sectors.
This announcement is not completely surprising. Kenya has been seriously exploring the AI area for some years now.
In 2018, the government set up a task force on Distributed Ledgers Technology and AI.
The group was specifically given the mandate to come up with a road map to exploit the potential of Artificial intelligence and blockchain technology.
Their 2019 report made clear that AI and other new technologies are important to improve national productivity and innovation acceleration.
The report sees AI as a primary catalyst for moving Kenya forward and putting it at the forefront in ICT within the region and globally.
This futuristic way of thinking has already started to be reflected in the country’s education system.
The Kenyan government gave the green light to introduce coding into the curriculum of both primary and secondary schools in 2022.
This project is an expression of the fact that a future generation that will not only use Artificial intelligence effectively but may also contribute to its development is being prepared.
The details of the National AI Strategy are still under wraps.
Nevertheless, it is anticipated that the joint project between the Kenyan government and GIZ will see extensive consultations across various sectors with stakeholders.
This approach would make sure that the strategy captures the needs and priorities of all sectors.
AI Strategy at national level may include a few of the many key elements.
Policy and regulation will likely be a major area of focus.
It is necessary to set clear guidelines to support responsible AI development and deployment, manage risks and address ethical considerations.

Also, Artificial intelligence can simplify administrative tasks in healthcare institutions, that will let medical professionals spend more time on patients.
Education: AI-driven mentors can customize learning for learners so that their individual needs and learning styles are met.
This technology can be of great help in remote areas where there might not be access to teachers who are qualified.
Agriculture: AI may turn out to be a game changer in the agricultural sector, optimizing resource management, monitoring crop health, and forecasting weather patterns.
This will bring about increased production and better food security.
Finance: AI can improve financial services by providing quicker loan approvals, fraud detection and personalized financial products.
The emergence of a National AI Strategy offers an excellent prospect for Kenya.
If the country uses artificial intelligence prudently and strategically, it can realize a more prosperous and equitable future.
The realization of this project will require the partnership of the government, private sector, academia, and civil society to work together.
With such joint efforts, Kenya will be able to guarantee that AI is utilized as an effective instrument for inclusive growth and sustainable development.
This particular project is a major leap in Kenya’s technology landscape.
As the whole nation begins its journey into this new era, the entire continent will have their eyes fixed on what happens next.
The success of Kenya’s National AI Strategy may set an example for other African countries to adopt artificial intelligence as a tool for bringing about positive change.
