Namibia Launches NAM-CSIRT to Strengthen National Cybersecurity

Namibia has taken a big step to protect its people, businesses, and government from online dangers by launching the Namibia Cyber Security Incident Response Team, known as NAM-CSIRT to strengthen national cybersecurity. The official announcement was made by the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN), and it’s a move that shows just how serious the country is about keeping its digital world safe.

NAM-CSIRT is being set up with N$20 million in funding from the Ministry of Information & Communication Technology (MICT). This money will help the team get the tools and experts they need to defend Namibia’s digital systems from hackers, scammers, and other online threats. With more people and businesses using the internet for work, communication, and banking, it’s become more important than ever for Namibia to strengthen cybersecurity.

Dr. Tulimevava Mufeti, who leads the CRAN board, explained that the launch of NAM-CSIRT is a sign that Namibia is ready to fight back against cyber threats. She said that as Namibia moves forward with digital technology, the risks of cyberattacks also grow, and the country needs to be prepared.

The new NAM-CSIRT team will be the first group to respond when there is a cyberattack or a digital emergency. They will help find out what happened, stop the attack, and make sure it doesn’t happen again. They will also give advice to people and companies about how to stay safe online.

Emma Theofelus, the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, said that having NAM-CSIRT is important for building trust in Namibia’s digital economy. She pointed out that cyber threats are getting more advanced and can affect anyone, so it’s important to have a team that can react quickly and effectively.

NAM-CSIRT has already shown how important it is. Earlier this year, the team started investigating a cyberattack on Paratus Namibia Holdings Ltd, which affected important computer systems. This happened not long after another attack on Telecom Namibia. These incidents show why Namibia needs to strengthen cybersecurity and have a team like NAM-CSIRT ready to help.

The team’s job is to protect important digital systems used by the government, businesses, and other organizations. They will work to prevent attacks, spot problems early, respond quickly, and share advice with everyone who needs it.

CRAN also recently brought together different groups for the first NAM-CSIRT Stakeholder Engagement in Windhoek. This meeting was about working together, sharing information, and building trust so that everyone can help protect Namibia’s digital world.

NAM-CSIRT is just one part of Namibia’s bigger plan to improve technology across the country. The government is also working on expanding internet access and bringing in faster 5G networks. But as technology grows, so do the risks, which is why launching NAM-CSIRT is such an important step.

With the launch of NAM-CSIRT, Namibia is showing that it’s ready to face the challenges of the digital age. The team will help make sure that everyone, from regular citizens to big companies, can use the internet safely and securely.
