Microsoft Teams deadline extension: Microsoft Teams classic users will now have more time to make the shift to the newer version of the productivity app following changes to Microsoft’s end-of-availability deadline.
This affects those still using Windows 10 versions and various older versions of MacOS. Beginning January 15, 2025, users on unsupported OS versions will be blocked from using the Microsoft Teams desktop client until they update to a supported version.
Those who don’t upgrade will no longer be able to make video calls, share files, or send messages via the much-used platform.
Additionally, users will soon start receiving alerts prompting them to update their operating systems to maintain support. In just a few months, Microsoft Teams will completely lose functionality on versions that are not supported.
Microsoft Teams deadline extension will give admins more time to identify and correct any issues with the upgrade.
“This will give admins more time to address any issues encountered during this process,” Microsoft said in an update.
Those with unsupported PCs should start seeing a banner appear next month which will ask them to upgrade.
The block will then come into force from January 15, 2025.

It’s not just Windows 10 PCs that will be affected either. Those with older Windows 11 and MacOS operating systems installed will face losing access to Teams unless they switch to a newer version.
According to Microsoft, the new Teams is twice as fast and consumes 50% less memory than the classic version.
Many responded vocally to the decision on social media, criticising the Microsoft Teams deadline extension and forcing the new Teams client on them.
Taking on board these criticisms, the firm has opted for a longer and more phased approach to rolling out the new Teams client.
