Nigeria Unveils Happy Woman App Platform to Empower Women Nationwide

Nigeria has launched a new app called the Happy Woman App Platform. This digital tool aims to connect millions of women across the country to money, skills training, and business opportunities. Officials say it is the biggest technology project ever made to include more women in Nigeria’s economy.

The app was unveiled at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. It acts as one easy place for women to find funding, business help, government programs, and important services. Women can use it to register for support, get payments, and join training sessions. This makes everything faster and cuts down on problems like lost money in the system.

Nigeria faces big challenges with gender gaps in money access. Women are much less likely than men to have bank accounts or get official loans. This holds back their small businesses, which they mostly run. Yet, these women-led micro and small businesses play a huge role in the economy. They make up almost half of Nigeria’s total GDP.

Data from the Social Institutions and Gender Index shows the problem clearly. Only about 35 percent of Nigerian women have a bank account at a financial place. For men, that number is 55 percent. This gap shows how many women are left out of the financial system. It proves the need for special programs to help them.

The app launch happens alongside a bigger push for the Nigeria for Women Programme. The government now wants to take it nationwide to reach 25 million women. President Bola Tinubu, speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima, said this is key to Nigeria’s growth plan. “A nation that pushes its women aside is heading for big trouble,” he warned. He added that women must be at the heart of the country’s plans for progress and work.

The programme started as a test in six states. It helped over one million women there. Many joined Women Affinity Groups. These groups gave them grants, savings plans, and help to improve their lives and businesses. Now, with the app, the government can reach even more women quickly and fairly.

The Happy Woman App makes things simple. Women can sign up easily on their phones. They get training to build skills, like how to run a business better. They can also link to loans and markets to sell their goods. This cuts waste and ensures help goes straight to those who need it.

By tackling financial exclusion, the app empowers women to grow their enterprises. Stronger businesses mean more jobs and a healthier economy for all Nigerians. It also builds on women’s central role in daily trade and small-scale work.

Vice President Shettima highlighted the urgency. With women driving so much of the GDP, leaving them out hurts everyone. The nationwide rollout will create groups like the pilot ones, focusing on savings, grants, and support.
