MTN has Announced Plans to Connect 8 Million Homes Using Fibre X by 2028

MTN has announced plans to connect 8 million homes using Fibre X by 2028, a big step to bring better internet to many people in Nigeria. This was shared by Egerton Idehen, MTN’s Chief Broadband Officer, during a talk with the media recently. The company wants to help Nigeria’s digital growth by improving internet access in homes across the country.

Right now, very few homes in Nigeria, less than 2%, have fixed broadband internet. Egerton Idehen said broadband is like the “electricity of the digital age.” This means just like electricity powers homes and businesses, broadband internet powers how people work, learn, and communicate today. MTN’s plan shows that they want to move from just being a normal phone company to a technology company, with broadband at the center of this change.

MTN already covers over 82% of Nigeria with its 4G LTE network and was the first to bring 5G to the country. Now, MTN plans to connect 8 million homes using Fibre X by 2028, hoping to reach many more with fast and reliable internet. Fibre X gives unlimited, high-speed internet designed to help homes and businesses work better and stay connected easily.

This plan fits well with the Nigerian government’s National Broadband Plan and Digital Economy Policy. Both aim to increase internet access across Nigeria and make sure people can get good speeds, whether they live in big cities or rural areas. MTN’s Fibre X plan supports this by helping grow the country’s economy and making Nigeria stronger in technology.

MTN has also said that their work is all about making internet affordable and easy for people to use. They work closely with local groups, state governments, and builders of new estates so that fiber internet can be part of new houses from the start. This local cooperation helps MTN reach more homes faster.

However, there are still challenges. Egerton Idehen talked about problems like vandalism and fiber cuts, which happen sometimes every day and slow down internet service. There are also issues with getting permission to lay fiber cables and some communities not welcoming the work. These problems make maintaining the network more expensive and harder. MTN praised the Nigerian Communications Commission for protecting important telecom infrastructure to help fix these issues.

For MTN, every home they connect “is a new chance for learning, growth, and connection.” The company wants to do more than just make money—they want to build a strong digital future for Nigeria.

Fibre X was formerly called MTN Fibre Broadband but changed its name in April. It now reaches 16 states and will spread to all 36 states plus the Federal Capital by 2028. MTN expects Fibre X to help increase Nigeria’s national fiber network from 35,000 kilometers to 125,000 kilometers by adding 90,000 more kilometers.

MTN will focus mostly on busy urban and semi-urban areas where many people live and work. Their plan combines fiber and 5G networks because they work well together. Fiber gives a strong and reliable connection, while 5G wireless covers places where fiber might be too expensive to install. MTN makes clear that Fibre X is not a replacement for 5G or other wireless networks but a way to work together to give Nigerians the best internet.

Egerton Idehen said, “Fibre X is not a substitute for other wireless networks like 3G or 4G. They all complement each other so that even hard-to-reach places can get coverage. We won’t bring a Rolls-Royce where there’s no road.”

MTN is also talking to other companies about adding shows and movies to the Fibre X packages to make the service even better and more fun.

Overall, MTN has announced plans to connect 8 million homes using Fibre X by 2028, showing a big commitment to improving the internet for Nigerian families. Their work supports the country’s goal to bring fast, affordable broadband to more people and helps build Nigeria’s future as a connected and digital nation.
