NIMC Plans to Reach 187 Million NIN Registrations by December

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has set an ambitious goal to reach 187 million National Identification Number (NIN) registrations by December 2025. This plan is part of a broader effort to enroll at least 95% of Nigerians into the national identity database before the end of the year, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for digital governance and inclusive development.

To achieve this target, NIMC has partnered with the Ministry of Youth Development and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Selected Youth Corps members will be trained to drive NIN enrollment across all wards in Nigeria’s 774 local government areas. This initiative aims to bring enrollment services closer to the people, especially focusing on children under 16, who have been difficult to reach in previous drives.

NIMC’s strategy includes expanding registration centers, improving infrastructure, and intensifying public sensitization campaigns to encourage more Nigerians to register. The commission has upgraded its systems to handle up to 250 million enrollees, a significant increase from the initial 100 million capacity. As of May 2025, over 120 million Nigerians have already been enrolled, leaving about 67 million more to reach the 187 million target by December.

The Ward Enrollment Exercise is a key part of this plan, bringing registration directly into communities to overcome barriers such as distance and limited access to registration centers. This approach is expected to help the commission capture data on more Nigerians, enabling better national planning, security, and social service delivery.

In addition to the youth-driven enrollment push, NIMC is also collaborating with other government agencies. For example, the Nigerian Correctional Service has enrolled nearly 60,000 inmates, about 74% of the total inmate population, into the NIN database. This effort ensures that even marginalized groups are included in the national identity system.

The NIMC Director-General, Engr. (Dr.) Abisoye Coker-Odusote, emphasized that the commission is committed to working with more partners to ensure no Nigerian or legal resident is left out of the NIN registration process. She highlighted the importance of this comprehensive enrollment for improving government services and fostering national development.

NIMC’s plan to reach 187 million NIN registrations by December reflects a major step toward digital inclusion in Nigeria. By empowering youth and leveraging partnerships, the commission aims to overcome previous challenges such as limited infrastructure and low public awareness. The success of this plan will be crucial for Nigeria’s ongoing digital transformation and the effective delivery of government programs.

NIMC plans to reach 187 million NIN registrations by December through a nationwide drive involving youth corps members, expanded infrastructure, and partnerships with key agencies. This effort will bring NIN enrollment closer to Nigerians in every ward, ensuring a more inclusive and secure national identity system for all citizens.
