Nigeria’s High 5G and Digital Readiness Ranking: The recent report, by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has acknowledged Nigeria’s progress in 5G and digital readiness placing the country at 71%.
This achievement ranks Nigeria among the seven nations in the BEMECS 5G Readiness Index signaling its strong foundation for the widespread implementation and acceptance of 5G networks.
Under the theme of “Collaborative Regulation; Accelerating Nigeria’s Digital Transformation ” presented by Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy this report underscores the role of governance in advancing digital frameworks.
Unveiled at the Digital Economy Complex in Abuja it highlights Nigeria’s advancements in establishing policy structures essential for digital transformation.
The assessment conducted in the report evaluates Nigeria’s maturity across four domains; collaborative governance, policy formulation, digital tools development and economic policy direction.
Noteworthy achievements include a regulatory capacity score of 91% and an impressive market rules rating of 82%.
These metrics showcase Nigeria’s dedication to nurturing an economy and adapting regulatory frameworks to address emerging challenges.
The presentation of this report garnered interest from industry stakeholders such as telecommunications service providers, government bodies and representatives, from international organizations.
Dr. Aminu Maida, the vice chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) highlighted the importance of working on regulations to encourage investments and enhance digital participation.

Minister Tijani thanked the ITU and collaborating organizations for their support emphasizing the government’s commitment to using the report as a roadmap to accomplish goals.
He stated, “Our goal is to ensure we have cutting-edge modern regulations that facilitate proper business conduct in our sector and enhance local content.”
Nigeria’s high ranking in digital readiness and 5G adoption reflects its potential to emerge as a significant player in the global digital economy.
