WhatsApp is stepping up its game to keep your chats safer. In a new update for Android beta users, version 2.26.7.8, the popular messaging app is testing an optional account password. This new tool adds extra protection on top of the current two-step verification system. It’s all about making it much harder for bad guys to break into your account.
Right now, WhatsApp lets you turn on two-step verification. This means after you enter your phone number and get the six-digit SMS code, you also punch in a special PIN you create. It’s a smart way to lock things down. A while back, in beta version 2.23.24.10, WhatsApp added another helpful trick: linking your account to an email. If your SIM card stops working and you can’t get the SMS code, you can use your email to get back in fast.

Now, WhatsApp is going further with this account password idea. Experts at Wabetainfo spotted it in the latest beta. It’s like a third lock on your door – a password you make up yourself. The big aim? Stop thieves even if they pull off tricks like SIM swapping, where they hijack your phone number, or if they snag your device somehow.

So, how does this password work? It’s a mix of letters and numbers, from 6 to 20 characters long. You need at least one letter and one number to make it strong. WhatsApp checks it right away and tells you if it’s tough enough. If not, it suggests ways to beef it up. The best part? You can change it or delete it anytime you want. You’re in full control.
This password fits right into how you log in. First, you get and enter the six-digit SMS code from your phone. If you have the password but no two-step PIN, it asks for the password next. But if you use both the PIN and password, it’s a triple check: SMS code, then PIN, then password. Imagine a crook gets your SMS code through SIM swapping and even guesses your PIN – they still can’t get in without your secret password.
Don’t worry, this is totally up to you. WhatsApp won’t force it on anyone, just like with two-step verification. It doesn’t replace the old protections; it just makes them stronger. Only you know this password, so it’s your personal shield.

For now, the feature is still being built and tested. Wabetainfo says WhatsApp is fine-tuning it to make sure it works perfectly against hackers. Once they’re happy, it’ll roll out slowly to everyone, starting with beta testers on Android through Google Play. No word yet on when iPhone users or the full public will see it.
Why does this matter? Account hacks are a huge problem. SIM swaps and phishing scams trick people out of their accounts every day. With over two billion users chatting on WhatsApp worldwide, stronger locks mean safer talks for everyone – from family groups in Nigeria to business deals in Kenya. This update shows WhatsApp listens to users who want top-notch security without making things complicated.
Keep an eye on your WhatsApp updates. If you’re in the beta program, you might spot this soon. Turn on two-step verification today if you haven’t, and get ready for even more peace of mind.
