New College for AI and Data Science Launches in Nanyang Technological University

Nanyang Technological University (NTU), a leading academic institution in Singapore, has taken a bold step towards shaping the future of technology education with the launch of its College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS)

College for AI and Data Science

This new college marks a significant milestone in the university’s commitment to nurturing talent and expertise in the ever-evolving fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and data science.

Building a Strong Foundation for AI and Data Science Leaders

The CCDS, established in August 2024, brings together the strengths of the university’s former School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCSE) with other data-driven disciplines across NTU.

This interdisciplinary approach fosters a dynamic learning environment where students gain a comprehensive understanding of both technical skills and the broader societal implications of AI and data science.

Leading the charge is Professor Luke Ong, a distinguished computer scientist and the current Chief Scientist for AI Singapore.

As the founding dean of the CCDS, Professor Ong brings a wealth of experience and expertise to guide the college’s mission of:

  • Developing industry-relevant curriculum: The CCDS offers a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including the innovative Bachelor of Science in AI and Society. These programs equip students with the technical skills needed to build and deploy AI systems, as well as the ethical considerations and social impact of their work.
  • Fostering interdisciplinary collaboration: The college actively encourages collaboration between AI and data science experts with researchers from other disciplines, such as engineering, medicine, and business. This fosters a culture of innovation and helps develop solutions that address real-world challenges across diverse sectors.
  • Preparing future leaders: The CCDS goes beyond technical training, instilling in students the leadership qualities and critical thinking skills necessary to become responsible and ethical leaders in the AI and data science landscape.

Addressing the Growing Demand for AI and Data Science Talent

The launch of the CCDS comes at a crucial time when the demand for skilled AI and data science professionals is skyrocketing globally.

With industries across various sectors increasingly reliant on data-driven insights and AI-powered solutions, graduates from the CCDS are well-positioned to secure rewarding careers in this dynamic field.

Furthermore, the college is committed to lifelong learning, offering a range of continuing education and training programs in AI and data science.

This caters to professionals seeking to upskill or reskill themselves to stay relevant in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

A Beacon of Innovation in Southeast Asia

The CCDS poses to become a leading center for AI and data science education and research in Southeast Asia.

With its focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, industry partnerships, and lifelong learning, the college addresses the challenges and opportunities the AI revolution presents.

The establishment of the CCDS marks a significant step forward for Nanyang Technological University and Singapore as a whole.

By nurturing the next generation of AI and data science leaders, the college is playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of technology in the region and beyond.
