Moldova Unveils a New Incubator for Digital Agriculture, Robotics, and FoodTech

Moldova unveils a new incubator for digital agriculture, robotics, and foodtech, marking an important step in modernizing the country’s farming and food sectors. On July 9, 2025, the government of Moldova revealed this innovative incubator at the Agrotek Arena Incubator, a special space designed to support digital agriculture, robotics, and food technology.

This new incubator is part of the Innovate Moldova Programme, funded by Sweden, which aims to bring new ideas, technology, and research to Moldova’s agriculture industry. The goal is to help farmers, students, and businesses work together to improve food production using modern tools and smart technology.

The launch of Moldova’s new incubator for digital agriculture came with a significant agreement. Moldova’s Ministry of Digitalization and Economic Development, the Technical University of Moldova (UTM), the Innovate Moldova Programme, and the Ukraine-Moldova American Enterprise Fund (UMAEF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate and support the incubator’s development. This agreement sets the stage for a strong partnership focused on the future of farming innovation in the country.

The incubator itself is located in the Agrotek Arena on UTM’s campus in Chișinău. It covers 1,300 square meters over two floors that have been refurbished to host up to 30 residents. These residents include startups, student entrepreneurs, researchers, and companies involved in the agri-food industry. Every year, the incubator is expected to benefit more than 3,000 students, farmers, and food processors by giving them access to new technologies, labs for prototyping, greenhouses, and innovation programs.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digitalization and Economic Development, Doina Nistor, spoke about the importance of the incubator. She said, “Agriculture remains a backbone of Moldova’s economy. Yet, without modern tools and forward-thinking infrastructure, its full potential cannot be realized. Agrotek Arena will serve as a launchpad for innovation, helping us bridge the gap between academia, industry, and global partners.” This shows that Moldova sees the incubator as a key place to connect schools, businesses, and international experts to build better farming solutions.

The incubator is expected to welcome its first residents by September 1, 2025. A special acceleration program will start in October to guide participants in developing real agritech products and services. These will focus on important areas like precision agriculture, smart irrigation, and sustainable food processing to make farming more efficient and eco-friendly.

Funding the project took a team effort. The total cost was one million dollars. Innovate Moldova Programme and UMAEF supported the renovation of shared spaces. UTM provided rent-free offices and made upgrades to improve energy efficiency. The residents themselves will arrange and pay for their office setups, such as air conditioning and technical equipment. This shared investment model helps keep costs reasonable while giving everyone a stake in the incubator’s success.

Moldova’s new incubator for digital agriculture will also connect with leading global technologies to support local farming. It has partnerships with companies like Davis Weather Stations, which offer climate-smart tools, Biosfera’s GPS AgTech solutions for smart use of resources, and SAS Cropio, a system for real-time farm data. These collaborations bring advanced technology to Moldova and open doors for trade and cooperation with Europe and North America.

Agrotek Arena is just the beginning of a bigger vision called Agrotek Park. Future plans include high-tech farms, research centers, and transforming old Soviet buildings into labs and innovation hubs.

As Sergiu Rabii, Programme Director at Innovate Moldova, said, “This is more than a building, it’s the beginning of Moldova’s transformation into a regional hub for sustainable agri-tech. By fostering ties between startups, universities, and international partners, we are laying the groundwork for high-value job creation and export-ready technologies.”

The incubator will also help Moldova meet European Union standards by focusing on sustainability, good environmental and social practices, and inclusive economic growth. Moldova unveils a new incubator for digital agriculture with a clear goal: to make farming smarter, greener, and stronger for the future of the country and the region.
