Ghanaian Cybercrime Syndicate Busted in a $100M FBI-Interpol Sting, Faces Extradition to the U.S

A Ghanaian cybercrime syndicate busted in a $100m FBI-Interpol sting has made headlines around the world. This high-profile group, operating out of Ghana, was taken down following a major international operation involving the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Interpol, and Ghanaian authorities. The suspects, accused of running a sophisticated $100 million fraud scheme, were arrested in Accra on June 13, 2025, and now face extradition to the U.S.

The Ghanaian cybercrime syndicate busted is said to have been led by Isaac Kofi Oduro Boateng, also known as Kofi Boat. Alongside him, two other men, one identified as Agony and another unnamed individual, were also arrested. A fourth suspect is still on the run. These suspects are believed to have orchestrated a complex fraud network between 2016 and 2023, using tactics like business email compromise (BEC) and romance scams to target individuals and companies in the United States.

Their methods were cunning. The syndicate would impersonate company executives through fake emails, tricking employees into making large wire transfers to accounts they controlled. They also sent forged documents to make their scams look more believable. In addition to targeting businesses, the group ran romance scams, mostly preying on elderly victims. By pretending to be romantic partners online, they convinced people to send money for fake emergencies or business opportunities.

U.S. prosecutors have traced at least $100 million in stolen funds to the syndicate, with at least one business and eight individuals confirmed as direct victims. The ringleader, Boateng, is said to have lived a lavish lifestyle in Accra, owning luxury cars and moving in elite circles.

The arrests followed an official request from the U.S. Embassy in Accra, which was supported by a warrant signed by Ghana’s Interior Minister in March 2025. On June 16, 2025, the three suspects appeared in an Accra court and were remanded in custody as they face extradition to the U.S. If convicted in a U.S. federal court, they could be sentenced to up to 40 years in prison for wire fraud and money laundering.

The FBI, Interpol, and Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) worked together for months to gather evidence and carry out the arrests.
