GenAI Enhances Productivity for Project Managers, Says PMI

The Project Management Institute (PMI) has released a report titled “First Movers’ Advantage: The Immediate Benefits of Adopting Generative AI for Project Management,” which highlights how GenAI boosts project manager productivity.

The report surveyed 500 project professionals using GenAI in their project work from around the globe and found that the adoption of GenAI has significantly enhanced the performance of project managers.

Increased GenAI Adoption Leads to Positive Outcomes

According to the report, organisations that encourage GenAI adoption see an increased use of GenAI among project professionals, leading to transformative and positive outcomes.

Trailblazers, who are early adopters of GenAI, are more productive (93% versus 58% of low adopters), elevate their problem-solving skills (89% versus 46%), and are more effective (88% versus 50%) by using GenAI.

High adopters also strengthen their interpersonal skills, which PMI calls “power skills,” by boosting collaboration (83% versus 32%) and creativity (84% versus 44%).

Improvements Across Project Management Aspects

The report further notes that high adopters of GenAI experience improvements in various aspects of project management, including project scope (87% versus 34%), scheduling (85% versus 46%), cost (85% versus 42%), and quality management (91% versus 40%).

GenAI Enhances Productivity for Project Managers, Says PMI

This indicates that GenAI is not only boosting project manager productivity, but also improving the overall efficiency and quality of project delivery.

A study by Microsoft and LinkedIn revealed that the use of GenAI doubled in the last few months of 2023, with 75% of knowledge workers using it.

This trend has been observed in PMI’s nearly one-million-member community of project professionals, reflecting the rapid adoption of GenAI in the industry.

Trailblazers Lead the GenAI Revolution

Pierre Le Manh, President and Chief Executive Officer of PMI, emphasized that GenAI trailblazers know how to maximize adoption to elevate their performance, navigate complex work, and usher in GenAI across their teams.

They stand out from their peers for their innovative leadership.

Le Manh noted that project leaders pioneering GenAI adoption gain strategic advantages by mastering rapid implementation and utilizing GenAI for complex tasks like data analysis and planning.

They are three times more likely than explorers to enhance their skills through GenAI (36% versus 12%) and actively advocate for organizational adoption.

Organizational Support Crucial for Accelerating Adoption

Le Manh highlighted that a key insight from the report is that it is much harder to accelerate adoption without organizational support.

Trailblazers are 10 times more likely to work for organizations that empower them to use GenAI.

He concluded that it is these forward-thinking organizations and their trailblazing project professionals who are seizing this moment and ready to lead the GenAI revolution.

Transforming Industries and Creating Opportunities

The findings of the report underscore the importance of GenAI in transforming every industry, creating more opportunities for project professionals as they help organizations implement this disruptive technology.

PMI aims to ensure that project professionals who haven’t yet added GenAI to their toolbox can quickly get up to speed and benefit from its exponential growth.

In summary, the adoption of GenAI has significantly boosted the productivity and performance of project managers, as evidenced by the findings of PMI’s report.

The benefits of GenAI adoption are not limited to productivity but also extend to improving collaboration, creativity, and the overall quality of project delivery.

As GenAI continues to transform industries, project professionals who adopt it early will be well-positioned to lead the revolution and drive innovation in their organizations.
