Ethiopian Airlines Set to Launch Electric Air Taxi Service

Ethiopian Airlines is taking another step towards the future of transportation with the launch of an electric air taxi service in Ethiopia. The new service will be launched by a collaborative effort of Ethiopian Airlines and Archer Aviation, a U. S. based company which has ambition to create an all-electric air taxi network throughout the region. “The Electric Air Taxi Service Launch will redefine urban travel in Africa, providing an alternative that is cleaner and faster”, said Abubakar, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines.

The real asset of the project is Archer’s Midnight aircraft, a pioneering electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicle able to fly on short distances with fast charging times between refuelling. With its 4-seat cabin it’s designed to be a suitable alternative to conventional fixed wing airplanes in congested urban environments. Ethiopian Airlines will deploy these aircraft into its fleet and will be supported by a team of pilots, technicians and engineers from Archer to ensure a smooth roll-out – arguably the biggest step forward for sustainability in aviation.

Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group said that “this is a very exciting project which is another step forward in our commitments to developing connectivity and driving sustainable transport in Africa. “We are very excited to partner with Archer Aviation to create a new development that will bring innovative eVTOL technology to Ethiopia,” he said. The Ethiopian Airlines Electric Air Taxi Service Launch underscores the airline’s vision to reduce carbon emissions while tackling congestion in cities.

This partnership isn’t only about air taxis. EgyptAir International and Ethiopian Airlines also intend to take the Midnight aircraft further with plans to boost ecotourism using the mighty aircraft: To promote more efficient and environmentally friendly travel, the Ethiopian Airlines Electric Air Taxi Service could be an option for tourists looking to explore Ethiopia’s natural beauty the smarter way.

Electric air taxis are particularly relevant for cities in Africa, where road network congestion, a lack of development and an urgent need for additional infrastructure can become serious issues. UAVs like the Midnight aircraft can be used to travel as a point-to-point transporter, bypassing road traffic entirely and thus removing potential stress on existing transit systems. This move by Ethiopian Airlines is a good example of how eVTOL technology will change how people travel in cities.

Archer’s CEO Adam Goldstein said the opportunities for air mobility advancement in Africa remain “huge – and there’s still so much to be done”, adding that this new cooperation with Ethiopian Airlines shows that “it’s only the beginning. ”More than 100 Air Taxis will now be provided by the Ethiopian Airlines Electric Air Taxi Service in Ethiopia, offering customers a convenient alternative to their existing taxi or other forms of private transport.

And it’s part of an international trend where airlines have already been connecting with manufacturers to create a new flying experience when it comes to short distance travel. Archer recently announced it had reached a similar arrangement with Abu Dhabi Aviation. As airline companies look to find ways to develop new services and cut their impact on the environment, projects like Ethiopian Airlines Electric Air Taxi Service Launch are set to lead to cleaner skies.

Ethiopian Airlines is arguably the largest carrier in Africa: the carrier operates more than 140 flights to more than 140 destinations across five continents. But a great leap forward for Ethiopia’s aviation industry can come from its use of a new, electric air taxi. The idea is simple. By working with urban residents, and setting itself apart from others by focusing on sustainability, it is possible to create a future-oriented and sustainable transportation infrastructure.
