Apple To Join OpenAI Board As Observer

Apple OpenAI board observer role: Apple and OpenAI are strengthening their relationship following their partnership announced at this year’s WWDC in June. 

According to the Financial Times (FT), this decision also comes after the two tech companies agreed to integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Apple products.

A new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurnman has revealed that Apple is also getting an observer role at OpenAI as part of the deal it has worked out with the Sam Altman-led company.

Phil Schiller, the head of Apple’s App Store and longtime member of its executive team, is set to represent the company in the observer role later this year, the report said, citing a source with knowledge of the matter. 

The board arrangement will take effect later this year, and Schiller hasn’t yet attended any meetings, according to the people. Details of the situation could still change.

The board observer role will put Apple on par with Microsoft, OpenAI’s biggest backer, and its main AI technology provider.

The job allows someone to attend board meetings without being able to vote or exercise other director powers. Observers, however, gain insights into how decisions are made at the company.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said in a statement, “Phil’s deep understanding of Apple’s ecosystem and his marketing acumen will be invaluable in this new role.” 

Additionally, he said, “His insights will help bridge the innovative capabilities of OpenAI with the user-centric design principles that Apple is known for.”
