M-PESA Ethiopia and Gebeya Launch Dala AI Bundle for Mobile Money Users

M-PESA Ethiopia has teamed up with Gebeya Inc. to launch the Dala AI Bundle. This new service lets Ethiopians use their mobile money wallets to pay for powerful AI tools. Announced in Addis Ababa on February 25, 2026, it’s a big step for the country. For the first time, people in Ethiopia can buy AI creation tools without needing a credit card, just their phone and M-PESA account.

This is also the first time an African mobile money service has offered AI tools as a regular product. In Ethiopia, few people have cards, but almost everyone uses mobile phones. Mobile money is already part of daily life for sending cash or paying merchants. Now, M-PESA is adding AI access to make digital services easier for millions.

The Dala AI Bundle gives users a subscription to Dala Studio, Gebeya’s AI platform. With it, people can build apps, create AI agents, make games, generate comics, and produce content. Best of all, it works in local languages like Amharic and Oromo. No more barriers from international payments. A simple M-PESA wallet is all you need to start creating.

Amadou Daffe, CEO of Gebeya Inc., says this changes everything for Africa’s AI story. “We’re not just selling a product,” he explained. “We’re giving every Ethiopian with a phone the power to build and create. A student in Addis, a shop owner in Bahir Dar, or a storyteller in Hawassa can now make digital content in their own language and pay with M-PESA, the app they use every day.”

Elsa Muzzolini, CEO of M-PESA Ethiopia, agrees. “M-PESA started with payments like transfers and bills,” she said. “Now, we’re becoming a door to all digital services. Partnering with Gebeya lets millions access AI through a platform they trust.”

M-PESA Ethiopia is part of Safaricom Ethiopia’s mobile money service. It got its license from the National Bank of Ethiopia in May 2023 and started working in August that year. The goal has always been to bring digital finance to more people across the country.

Right now, you can get the Dala AI Bundle through the Dala Studio platform. Soon, it will be built right into the M-PESA app for even easier use.

This launch builds on Gebeya’s work in Ethiopia. They already trained thousands of developers through the Safaricom Talent Cloud program. Now, the focus is on giving everyone, not just trainees, direct access to AI tools.

Why does this matter? Ethiopia has a young population and a growing digital economy. But advanced tools were hard to get because of poor internet or payment problems. The Dala AI Bundle fixes that by offering local-language AI and mobile money payments. It lowers costs and opens doors.

Entrepreneurs can use AI agents to run their businesses better. Content makers can create comics or videos in Ethiopian languages. Small shops can build simple apps without big expenses. This could spark a boom in creators and developers.

On a bigger scale, it fits Ethiopia’s push for digital change. Easier AI access can speed up progress in schools, media, shops, and services.

For M-PESA, this makes it more than a payment app, it’s key digital infrastructure. For Gebeya, it proves their AI bundle works for huge audiences, using M-PESA’s network.

The real win is making AI fit Ethiopia. Instead of copying tools from the West, Dala focuses on local needs and languages. If it catches on, other African countries with strong mobile money could copy this model.
