Threads Surpasses X in Daily Mobile Users, Fresh Data Reveals

Threads has really been making waves lately, and fresh data just confirms it: Threads surpasses X in daily mobile users. According to a report from market intelligence firm Similarweb, Meta’s Threads app is now pulling in more daily active users on mobile devices than Elon Musk’s X. It’s a big shift, especially since X still holds strong on the web, but the Threads mobile app for iOS and Android keeps climbing with more people logging in every day over the past several months.

The numbers don’t lie. Similarweb’s latest data, as of January 7, 2026, shows Threads hitting 141.5 million daily active users on iOS and Android after steady growth. Meanwhile, X sits at 125 million daily active users on mobile.

This isn’t some knee-jerk reaction to the recent mess on X, either, where folks were caught using the platform’s AI tool, Grok, to whip up non-consensual nude images of women, sometimes even minors. The backlash over those deepfake images has gotten serious, with California’s attorney general launching an investigation into Grok. Other places like the UK, EU, India, Brazil, and more are digging in too. That drama even gave a boost to Bluesky, the social networking startup, with more app installs popping up in recent days.

Threads surpasses X in daily mobile users

No, Threads’ rise in daily mobile usage feels more like the payoff from longer-term moves. Think about the cross-promotions from Meta’s big hitters like Facebook and Instagram, where Threads gets pushed right to existing users. Then there’s the focus on creators, plus a flurry of new features rolling out fast. Over the past year, they’ve added stuff like interest-based communities, smarter filters, direct messages, long-form text posts, disappearing content, and now they’re even testing games. All that has people turning to Threads on their phones as a daily habit, and the numbers show Threads surpasses X in users overall on mobile.

Meta’s own stats back this up. Back in August 2025, they announced Threads had topped 400 million monthly active users. By October last year, it was up to 150 million daily active users. The momentum hasn’t slowed, Similarweb noted last summer that Threads was closing in on X for mobile dominance, with a whopping 127.8% year-over-year growth by late June 2025.

It’s worth noting some regional differences too. Similarweb points out X still leads in the U.S., but Threads surpasses X in users there too as the gap shrinks. Just a year ago, X had twice as many daily active users in the States as it does now. On the flip side, Threads barely registers on the web, while X keeps a solid grip there. Similarweb data shows X pulling about 150 million daily web visits steadily. As of January 13 this week, X clocked 145.4 million daily web visits, compared to Threads’ combined 8.5 million across Threads.com and Threads.net.

Put it all together, and it’s clear Threads is carving out a real spot in people’s mobile routines. Threads surpasses X in daily mobile users, and with the steady feature updates and Meta’s ecosystem push, it looks like this trend could keep building.
