Teraco, a Digital Realty company and a major player in interconnection platforms and vendor-neutral colocation data centres in Africa, has just wrapped up a big expansion of its Cape Town data centre called CT2. This move boosts the total critical IT load capacity to a whopping 50 megawatts (MW), making it one of the largest in the region. It’s a huge step forward for South Africa’s digital infrastructure and puts Teraco’s Cape Town campus right at the heart of cloud computing, AI work, and enterprise applications on the continent.
So, what’s new with this expansion? Teraco has added 32MW of fresh capacity spread over eight new data halls across three levels at the CT2 facility. This means that Cape Town’s campus can now support more computing power than ever before, making it easier for businesses to grow their services with plenty of room to scale.

Jan Hnizdo, CEO of Teraco, pointed out that this expansion shows how committed the company is to meeting Africa’s growing thirst for big-scale infrastructure. The new facility lets clients scale smoothly and offers resilience along with an extensive network ecosystem. It also provides many options for low-latency, high-speed connections, which is a must for today’s fast-paced digital world.

As artificial intelligence and data-driven applications continue to spread across Africa, the demand for powerful computing and quick connections is skyrocketing. Teraco’s CT2 is designed with these needs in mind, supporting advanced cooling technology like liquid-to-liquid cooling, which is perfect for running AI training clusters, inference nodes, or huge data lakes without overheating.
Clients using Platform Teraco get direct access to major cloud service providers, easy peering through the NAPAfrica internet exchange point, and close links to many carriers and content providers. This setup means faster, more reliable connections and easier integration with global internet hubs.
The expanded CT2 data centre is connected to the older CT1 facility through multiple fiber routes, allowing seamless communication between the two. Together, they support over 7,000 interconnects right on the Cape Town campus. Plus, the centre links to all the major subsea cable systems landing near Cape Town, including ACE, Equiano, SAT-3, SAFE, WACS, and 2Africa. This makes Teraco’s Cape Town location a key digital gateway for internet traffic moving within Africa as well as internationally.
The expansion has also had a positive effect on the local economy by creating hundreds of construction-related jobs during the build phase and hiring around 30 new full-time staff to keep things running smoothly. This boost to regional employment also supports skills development in the area.
Considering Cape Town’s ongoing water challenges, Teraco took sustainability seriously in designing the CT2 expansion. The data centre uses a zero-water, closed-loop cooling system combining free air cooling with AI-powered energy management. This system keeps the facility cool without using a drop of water, helping it achieve one of the best power usage effectiveness (PUE) ratings in the industry.

Looking forward, Teraco is also pushing ahead with its green energy plans through a 120MW solar project. This renewable energy will be supplied to its data centres, including the newly expanded CT2, using energy wheeling. Owning and operating their own clean energy sources shows that Teraco wants to support Africa’s digital growth responsibly and sustainably.
Overall, Teraco expands its Cape Town data centre to meet the future head-on with more space, better technology, green innovations, and a stronger network. The CT2 upgrade not only strengthens the company’s position in the digital infrastructure market but also benefits the whole region by enhancing connectivity and supporting new digital opportunities.
