Vertiv secures multi-year deal with Airtel Nxtra, and this is big news for Africa’s digital future. Vertiv, known around the world for its work in digital infrastructure, has teamed up with Nxtra by Airtel Africa. This deal will help build some of the largest data centers across Africa, starting in Nigeria. It’s the first step in Nxtra’s plan to grow its network and bring powerful, energy-saving technology to many African countries.
In this deal, Vertiv will provide special cooling systems, backup power supplies with batteries, and also take care of setting everything up and keeping it running smoothly. The first project is a huge 42-megawatt data center in Nigeria. This center will be built in four parts and should be ready by 2028. Vertiv’s local team in Nigeria will handle the installation and offer support for five years to make sure the center works without problems or downtime.

Yash Issur, the CEO of Nxtra, said this investment is very important. He explained that building large and strong data centers will help Africa grow digitally. For Nxtra, having a partner like Vertiv, which has global experience and strong support in Africa, was the right choice. He also mentioned that Vertiv has worked with Airtel in India before, which made them confident they could deliver what Africa needs.
Karsten Winther, president of Vertiv for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, shared that Airtel and Vertiv have a long history, working together for nearly 30 years. He added this new deal combines international technology with local African support, making it a strong team effort.
Vertiv secures multi-year deal as a key partner in Nxtra’s plans to expand to other countries too, like Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, where Airtel Africa provides service. According to Wojtek Piorko, Vertiv’s managing director for Africa, this partnership is a big step in building Africa’s digital backbone. He said Africa’s fast-growing population and rising demand for data are pushing the need for reliable digital infrastructure.
Data use in Africa is growing fast, thanks to cloud computing, fintech, and smart new technologies like artificial intelligence. In Nigeria, data use hit a record in 2025, reaching 1.1 million terabytes per month by July. This huge increase is mostly from cloud services, video streaming, and digital business operations. These trends are encouraging more investments in data centers, with Nigeria’s total capacity now at about 136.7 megawatts.

Even though energy prices are rising and some internet subscription numbers are changing, the need for good digital infrastructure is only growing. Nxtra’s new data centers, including a very large one planned for Nairobi, will meet global standards for being green, secure, and powerful. The Nairobi center will be even bigger than the one in Nigeria.
This multi-year deal secured by Vertiv with Airtel Nxtra is a major moment for Africa’s tech growth. It shows how important partnerships between global and local companies are to bring the best technology to Africa. As the continent’s digital world keeps growing, deals like this one will help build the strong, efficient systems that people and businesses need every day.
