MTN May Renew Talks to Buy Telkom

MTN may renew talks to buy Telkom, and this news has many people in South Africa’s telecom world paying close attention. According to reports from Bloomberg News, MTN Group is thinking about starting discussions again to buy Telkom, a major rival in the telecom market. These talks were stopped before, but now it looks like MTN may want to pick them up again before the year ends. That said, there is no guarantee that anything will come from these talks yet.

The idea that MTN talks to buy Telkom might start again is not new. The last time MTN showed real interest in buying Telkom was back in June 2023. MTN had made an offer in July 2022 but then stepped away after Telkom’s board chose to explore a deal with a smaller company called Rain. Rain is a wireless broadband startup, but those talks with Rain didn’t lead to a deal, so they fell through.

MTN may buy Telkom because combining the two companies could create a stronger telecom business in South Africa. When news came out about MTN’s possible new talks, Telkom’s shares jumped by over 13% in the Johannesburg market, closing at R55.56. This shows that investors are excited about the idea and hope the talks might actually move forward.

There are some big challenges, though. One of the main issues is that the South African government owns 40.5% of Telkom. Without the government’s approval and support, any deal to buy Telkom will be very hard to complete. The last time MTN and Telkom were in talks, the government didn’t clearly support the deal, which made it harder for the talks to succeed. This time around, the same challenge could come up again.

Also, Telkom’s CEO, Serame Taukobong, has said that some parts of Telkom won’t be sold. For example, Openserve — Telkom’s big fibre network business — is not for sale. Openserve owns a huge fibre network, nearly 170,000 kilometers, making it the second-largest home fibre provider in the country. Even though Vodacom bought a big stake in Maziv, which owns companies like Vumatel, Openserve stays with Telkom. But it’s worth noting that earlier this year, Telkom worked with Bank of America to check if investors or partners might be interested in parts of its business.

If MTN may renew talks to buy Telkom, it could change the telecom industry in South Africa. MTN is already a big player, and buying Telkom would increase its services and coverage a lot. Together, they could offer better mobile services and more fibre broadband options to people in the country.

Still, if MTN talks to buy Telkom start again, many things need to fall into place for the deal to happen. It will need government approval and a lot of negotiation between the two companies. So even though there might be new discussions before the end of this year, it is still uncertain if the deal will actually go through.

For now, the news that MTN may buy Telkom brings hope and attention to the telecom market. People will be watching closely to see if MTN and Telkom can come to an agreement. If they do, it would be a major step for both companies and could change the way South Africans connect to the internet and phone services. But only time will tell if MTN may renew talks to buy Telkom and if those talks will lead to a real deal.
