Federal Government of Nigeria Increases Passport Fee by 100% Starting from Sep 1

The Federal Government of Nigeria has decided to double the price of passports starting from September 1, 2025. This means the cost of getting or renewing a Nigerian passport will increase by 100%. The government says this price rise will help improve the quality of passport services in the country.

Before the increase, a 32-page Nigerian passport, which lasts for 5 years, cost N50,000. But now, the FG increases passport fee by 100%, so it will cost N100,000. For the 64-page passport, which is valid for 10 years, the price has also doubled from N100,000 to N200,000. This change was announced by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) through a statement signed by their Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi. The NIS said the new fees apply only to people applying inside Nigeria. Nigerians living abroad will still pay the same fees—$150 for the 32-page and $230 for the 64-page passports.

It’s important to remember that the FG increases passport fee by 100% now, but last year, the government already raised the price by a smaller amount. In 2024, the cost of the 32-page passport went up by 42%, from N35,000 to N50,000. The 64-page passport also increased by 33%, from N75,000 to N100,000. This new 100% increase is a big jump compared to last year.

The Nigerian Immigration Service said the FG increases passport fee to help keep the passport’s quality and trust high. They want the Nigerian passport to be reliable and internationally respected. But many Nigerians may find this price increase hard, especially as money is tight for many people right now.

Despite the rise in cost, the government says it is working hard to make sure passport services improve. Under President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the leadership of Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, many changes have made the passport process faster and easier. Since the current government started, they cleared over 200,000 passport application backlogs. This means many people who waited a long time can now get their passports.

The government also introduced new technology like online application portals, e-visa platforms, and contactless passport renewals for Nigerians living abroad. These changes have helped the Immigration Service pay off ₦28 billion in old debts without extra money from the government. These efforts show a real wish to improve the system even as the FG increases passport fee by 100%.

On the world stage, the Nigerian passport has also gotten better. According to the Henley Passport Index in July 2025, Nigeria’s passport now ranks 88th globally. This is an improvement from 95th place in 2024 and 97th in 2023. Nigeria is now ranked alongside countries like Ethiopia and Myanmar, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 45 countries. Still, Nigeria’s passport remains one of the weaker ones in Africa, with South Africa ranked much higher at 45th.

Even with these improvements, the FG increases passport fee by 100% starting September 1 will be a big challenge for many Nigerians. The Immigration Service says they will try to balance good service with making passports affordable for everyone. They promise to keep working on quality while being careful about cost.

While the government believes this will help make Nigerian passports better and keep them trusted across the world, many Nigerians will feel the pinch in their pockets.
