Vodacom Business Teams Up With NAVIC To Fight Crime In South Africa

Vodacom Business has teamed up with the National Vehicle Intelligence Cloud (NAVIC) to fight crime in South Africa by using advanced technology to improve public safety. This partnership is designed to help prevent criminal activities and support law enforcement in catching criminals more effectively.

The collaboration uses NAVIC’s real-time, cloud-based vehicle intelligence platform powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) through Vodacom Business. This technology collects data from Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, which scan over 120 million license plates every month. NAVIC’s system processes this information quickly, matching vehicle number plates with databases of vehicles of interest, such as those linked to crimes or missing persons, including information from the South African Police Services. Verified alerts are then sent out in seconds, with human oversight provided by NAVIC’s National Operations Centre, ensuring that the information follows police protocols.

Prince Hlatshwayo, Vodacom Business Executive Head of AWS Cloud Solutions, said the partnership shows how technology can make a real difference in communities. He explained that Vodacom is focused on impact and improving lives through technology, and working with NAVIC and AWS helps law enforcement officers and benefits South African citizens. As NAVIC grows its network and services, Vodacom Business looks forward to continuing this work together and achieving more successes in reducing crime.

NAVIC’s Director and head of sales, André Snyman, highlighted that their National Operations Centre works with both public and private security groups to fight various crimes, including hijacking, kidnapping, and even human trafficking. The platform has played an important role in solving kidnapping cases, helping the SPCA rescue animals that were mistreated, and even finding a missing elderly man with dementia by working with neighborhood watch groups. Snyman praised Vodacom Business for providing the necessary AWS cloud infrastructure that powers these operations.

Storing around seven billion license plate reads and metadata on the AWS cloud, NAVIC uses AWS’s fast data processing and artificial intelligence to handle this huge amount of data efficiently. This ability is key to keeping ANPR technology effective by delivering quick and accurate alerts. Using AWS cloud services helps NAVIC manage its costs while scaling up its network and including more users and cameras. Vodacom Business supports NAVIC by offering local currency billing, extended invoice terms, and personalized solutions that meet NAVIC’s specific needs.
