This new report shows how Airtel Africa is working hard to make life better for millions of people in 14 African countries. Airtel Africa’s CEO, Sunil Taldar, talked about the company’s progress. He said, “This year’s achievements, from connecting 2,176 schools through the UNICEF partnership to reaching 44.6 million Airtel Money customers with near-gender parity, prove that the power of technology is a catalyst for gender balance. At Airtel Africa, we believe to not only expanding networks but we’re also building bridges to education, financial security and sustainable growth for Africa’s next generation.”
Here are some of the main highlights from the Airtel Africa Sustainability Report for 2025:
First, Airtel Africa has increased its network coverage to reach 81.2% of people in the 14 countries where it operates. This is up from 80.4% last year. They now have over 36,000 4G sites, and more than 15,300 of these are in rural areas. The company spent $670 million to make sure their network is faster and more reliable. This means more people can use their phones for calls, internet, and mobile money services, which opens up new opportunities for work, business, and staying in touch with family.
Second, Airtel Africa is working hard to make sure everyone gets a fair chance to use digital services. The number of people using data on Airtel’s network grew to 73.4 million, which is 14% more than last year. Airtel Money, their mobile money service, now has 44.6 million customers, and nearly half of them are women. The number of Airtel Money agents has also gone up to 1.7 million. More women are working at Airtel Africa too, now almost 30% of their staff are women. These changes show that Airtel Africa is serious about boosting ESG and inclusion across 14 markets.
Another big step is in education. Airtel Africa connected 2,176 schools to the internet for free this year, up from 1,201 last year. This helps students and teachers get the resources they need to learn and grow. The company’s growing agent network is also creating jobs and helping entrepreneurs across Africa.
Airtel Africa is also thinking about the environment. They switched 500 sites from diesel generators to regular power, which is better for the planet. The company managed to recycle 93% of its waste this year, showing they are committed to being more environmentally friendly.
