Casio Confirms Data In Ransomware Attack, Customers Data Stolen

Casio Ransomware Attack: Casio now confirms it suffered a ransomware attack earlier this month, warning that the personal and confidential data of employees, job candidates, and some customers was also stolen.

The attack was disclosed Monday when Casio warned it was facing system disruption and service outages due to unauthorized access to its networks during the weekend.

Casio Ransomware Attack Allegedly Caused By A Ransomware Group

Casio’s statement confirms that the attackers accessed personal information belonging to Casio employees, contractors, business partners, and people who have interviewed for the company, along with sensitive company data including invoices, human resources files, and some technical information belonging to the company. 

Hackers also accessed “information about some customers,” Casio said, but did not state which types of data had been accessed or how many individuals have been so far affected.

Casio ruled out a compromise of credit card information, saying its Casio ID and ClassPad services were unaffected by the breach. 

It has not been confirmed who is behind the attack. However, the Underground ransomware group claimed responsibility for the attack, leaking various documents allegedly stolen from the Japanese tech giant’s systems.

Leaked Information Could Lead To Privacy Violation

As the investigation continues, Casio anticipates the scope of the breach could expand. Individuals who may be affected are advised to remain cautious of unsolicited emails and phishing attempts. 

Casio has also urged the public to refrain from sharing leaked information online, noting that doing so could worsen the situation for those impacted by the data breach.

“Please refrain from spreading this information through social media, etc., as it could increase the damage caused by the leak of information on this case, violate the privacy of those affected, have serious effects on their lives and businesses, and encourage crime”, Casio warned.

Underground is a relatively new ransomware and extortion group, first carrying out cyberattacks in June 2023. 

Microsoft previously linked the ransomware operation to the Russia-linked cybercriminal group known as Storm-0978 (also known as “RomCom” for use of its eponymous malware). 

Note that authorities, including Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission and the police, have been informed of the situation. Investigations are ongoing as efforts to remediate the breach and mitigate further damage continue.
