Google’s Product Impact on Digital Technology in Nigeria, Generates $1.8 Billion in 2023

Google impact on Nigeria was highlighted in the Google report yesterday, October 3, 2024. The independent report was carried out by Public First, a global policy and strategy consultancy, specializing in economic modeling and opinion research. 

The report, tagged, “Google Nigeria Economic Impact Report,” highlighted the transformative impact of digital technologies on Nigeria’s economy, and how Google’s products and infrastructure were driving digital transformation and contributing to economic growth across the country.

According to the Nigeria Digital Opportunity report, key services such as Google Search, Ads, Google Play, YouTube, and Google Cloud helped boost Google impact on Nigeria. The impact is especially seen in businesses, creators, and workers.

Google’s initiatives, including its digital skills programs and the Career Certificates Program, also had a significant impact, with over 1.5 million young Nigerians gaining new digital skills in 2023.

When it comes to learning, Google Search has become a dominant feature of the internet for Nigerians. Free of charge, the tool creates value for both consumers and businesses alike, helping people acquire knowledge and skills, breaking down information costs, and connecting consumers to local businesses.

The search engine giant pointed to its digital skills programs and career certificates programme as key drivers of Nigeria’s digital transformation, with over 1.5 million young Nigerians acquiring new digital skills in 2023.

Commenting on the findings, Google’s Director for West Africa, Olumide Balogun, said, “We’re thrilled to see the positive impact that digital technology is having on Nigeria’s economy.

“This report reveals Google impact on Nigeria.

Additionally, this report underscores the importance of continued investment in digital skills and infrastructure to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s vibrant digital economy.”

Google Investment In Nigeria Plays A Key Role In Its Economic Development

The Google impact on Nigeria report emphasizes the vast potential for Nigeria’s digital economy to continue growing. It revealed that for every $1 invested in digital technology in Nigeria, over $8 in economic value is generated. This underscores the importance of digital tools like cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and connectivity in shaping the country’s economic future.

Additionally, the study estimates that AI alone could contribute an extra $15 billion to Nigeria’s economy by 2030. Google’s commitment to responsible AI development is expected to play a key role in this growth. To fully harness AI’s potential, the report recommends stronger cloud-first policies and improved digital infrastructure, alongside a focus on enhancing STEM education and AI literacy to equip Nigeria’s workforce better.

The Director and Head of Technology Policy at Public First, Amy Price, said, “Nigeria is a digital frontrunner in Africa, and tech investment will be a powerful catalyst for further growth and development across the country.

“This is particularly true when it comes to connectivity, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence.”

Price also highlighted the significant role that AI will play in shaping Nigeria’s future economy, with the report estimating that AI could add $15 billion to Nigeria’s GDP by 2030.

“To maximize this potential, Nigeria must focus on building a strong digital infrastructure and investing in STEM education to prepare its workforce for the jobs of tomorrow,” Price explained.
