X is Introducing Audio and Video Calls to Android

Elon Musk’s social network X has introduced audio and video calls to its Android client, according to a tweet from one of the X engineers working on the project.

With the ever-evolving demands of the digital age, X recognizes the importance of staying at the forefront of technological advancements.

The addition of audio and video calls to Android is a strategic step towards meeting the diverse communication needs of users who rely on their devices for both personal and professional interactions.

The feature was first rolled out to iOS users in October 2023 and is now available to Android users. Users can enable or disable calling through Settings > Privacy and Safety > Direct Messages.

The same menu gives people the ability to control who can call them: people in their address book, people they follow, and verified users. It is worth noting that any user can receive a call, but only paid users can place a call.

X CEO Linda Yaccarino confirmed in August 2023 that the new feature would be coming soon, adding that it would be part of the process of transitioning the platform into an “everything app.”

In a post on X, Elon Musk confirmed the rollout of audio and video calls, adding that it’s an “early version” of the feature. Musk has long hinted at adding audio and video calls to the platform as part of his goals to make it Android, Mac, and PC, with “no phone number needed.”

X, formerly known as Twitter, has been expanding its features since Musk took over a year ago. The platform has been adding new features, including the ability to make voice and video calls, to compete with other social media platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp.

However, it is still unclear how widely X has launched audio and video calls or if non-Premium users can use them.

This latest update from X promises to redefine how users connect with friends, family, and colleagues. The convenience of making audio and video calls directly from the Android platform ensures a streamlined communication experience.

Whether it’s a quick catch-up with a friend or a virtual meeting with business associates, X’s new feature empowers users to communicate effortlessly.

The rollout of this feature will be gradual, ensuring a smooth transition for users. X aims to make the audio and video call functionality available to Android users across different regions, ensuring widespread accessibility.

The phased approach also allows X to gather valuable user feedback, ensuring continuous improvement and refinement of the feature.

X’s introduction of audio and video calls on Android marks a significant milestone in the evolution of communication technology. This innovative feature not only meets the immediate needs of users but also positions X as a trailblazer in enhancing the Android experience.

As we embrace this era of digital connectivity, X continues to be at the forefront, shaping the future of communication on the Android platform.
