Superhuman Integrates AI-Powered Categorization to Reduce Email Spam

In a world where our inboxes are constantly flooded with unwanted emails, Superhuman is stepping up to the challenge with its new AI-powered categorization feature. This innovative tool aims to reduce the clutter of spam and marketing emails, allowing users to focus on what truly matters.

Rahul Vohra, the CEO of Superhuman, explained that the surge in cold emails containing marketing and spam content prompted the company to take action. Relying on generic spam filters from Gmail and Outlook wasn’t sufficient, so Superhuman decided to develop its own classification system to address the issue.

The new Auto Label feature automatically sorts incoming emails into categories like marketing, pitches, social, and news. Users can also create custom labels to fit their specific needs. Moreover, the system allows users to automatically archive certain categories, further streamlining their inbox.

Superhuman AI-Powered Categorization reduces email spam, but AI has been assisting with spam filtering for quite some time. As early as the 1990s, machine learning algorithms were used to detect unwanted emails. AI algorithms analyze emails for phishing schemes, malicious attachments, and fraudulent links. They also scan message content to identify characteristics of spam and monitor user interactions to detect suspicious activity.

SendLayer explains that AI spam filters work by first receiving the incoming email, then extracting key features such as the sender, headers, subject line, and links. Next, machine learning models analyze these features against trained models and historical data to assign a spam score. Based on this score, the email is either flagged as spam or allowed into the inbox.

While AI offers undeniable anti-spam capabilities, human oversight remains crucial. Human intelligence is needed to analyze new threats, identify weaknesses in security systems, and handle false positives and negatives generated by algorithms. Hackers also use human intelligence to bypass filters, making a combination of AI and human expertise necessary for effective email security.

Superhuman AI-Powered Categorization relies on both AI and user input. The company plans to integrate IFTTT-styled workflows with AI prompts in the future. For example, users could set a template for responding to recruiting emails and automatically forward them to the recruiting department if certain criteria are met.

Another company, SlashNext, recently introduced GenAI for Spam and Graymail, which uses a generative AI large language model (LLM) to detect and filter spam. This service enhances accuracy, reduces false positives, and improves user productivity. It also integrates with Microsoft Defender for Office 365, providing a robust defense-in-depth strategy.

The rise of AI-powered cybercrime tools has made it even more important to combat email spam. SlashNext Threat Labs reported a significant increase in malicious phishing emails since the launch of ChatGPT. The FBI has also reported substantial losses from Business Email Compromise (BEC).
