SearchGPT: OpenAI’s AI Search Tool vs. Google: OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has released a new prototype called SearchGPT.
This AI powered search tool is gunning for Google’s search engine crown by being more conversational and informative.
SearchGPT is currently being tested with a small group of users and publishers and provides users with quick and direct answers to their questions and clear links to sources.
Unlike traditional search engines that rely on keyword matching, SearchGPT understands the context and intent behind the question with the help of OpenAI’s GPT-4 family of large language models (LLMs).
“We can make search better than it is today,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “We are launching a prototype called SearchGPT. We will learn from the prototype, make it better and then integrate it into ChatGPT to make it real-time and maximally helpful.”
The launch of SearchGPT not only takes on Google’s search engine crown but also puts OpenAI head to head with Microsoft’s Bing search engine which uses OpenAI technology.
SearchGPT also competes with emerging services like Perplexity, a search focused AI chatbot company backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and semiconductor giant Nvidia.
“Getting answers on the web can take a lot of work, often requiring multiple tries to get relevant results” OpenAI said in a post on their website. “We think that by adding real-time information from the web to our conversational models, finding what you’re looking for can be faster and easier.”
SearchGPT goes beyond keyword matching by understanding the context and intent behind the question.
Powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 family of large language models (LLMs) it analyzes the language used, the relationships between words and the overall meaning of the question to give more relevant and informative results.
The search tool starts with a large text box that asks the user “What are you looking for?” and then uses that information to figure out what the user is really looking for.
It also takes into account the user’s previous interactions and overall knowledge base to give more personalized results.
Once the results appear users can ask follow up questions or click on the sidebar to open other relevant links.
SearchGPT isn’t limited to text either as it also has a “visual answers” feature that can generate and respond to various media formats like images and videos.

SearchGPT has already made waves in the market with Alphabet’s shares down 3% on Thursday. But SearchGPT isn’t without its challenges.
One of the biggest challenges for SearchGPT and other AI powered search engines is content licensing and legal action from publishers.
Perplexity for example is facing legal action from publishers like Wired, Forbes and Condé Nast.
To address this OpenAI is saying they will give publishers tools to control how their content appears in SearchGPT results.
They have also signed content licensing agreements with major organizations like the Associated Press, News Corp and Axel Springer.
Despite the challenges SearchGPT presents big opportunities for OpenAI and the search engine market as a whole.
By adding AI to search OpenAI is positioning itself as a leader in the space and will likely attract a large number of users looking for a more advanced and helpful search experience.
Plus the launch of SearchGPT will likely drive innovation in the search engine market as Google and Microsoft will have to invest heavily in AI powered search to stay competitive.
SearchGPT is a big deal in the history of search. OpenAI is taking on Google and giving users a more advanced and helpful search experience.
There are challenges ahead like content licensing and legal action from publishers but SearchGPT presents big opportunities for OpenAI and the search engine market as a whole.
As AI gets better AI powered search engines will become more common and the search engine market will get more competitive and innovative.
Only time will tell how SearchGPT and other AI powered search engines will do in the long run but one thing is for sure SearchGPT has shaken up the search engine market and will have a lasting impact on how we find things on the web.
