FG Set To Launch New Internet Protocol version To Strengthen Cybersecurity

The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to launch the latest version of Internet Protocol (IPv6), to strengthen digital security.

The new development will enhance the identification, numbering and tracking of Internet users and their devices in Nigeria. 

The announcement was made during the IPv6 Driven Digital Summit, themed “Bringing Net 5.5G Into Reality: Inspiring New Growth.”

The summit was organized by the National Information Technology Development Agency in collaboration with Huawei, the IPv6 Forum, and the IPv6 Council of Nigeria.

The new initiative will improve the management and security of digital space. Consequently, it makes it easier to monitor and protect online activities.

It will also bring Nigeria in line with global standards for cybersecurity and digital infrastructure.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, emphasized that Nigeria’s adoption of IPv6 positions it among the leading African nations embracing this advanced protocol. 

He went on to emphasize the need for Nigeria to remain competitive in the global scene, adding that Nigeria has become a destination country in the digital ecosystem in Africa. 

Economic Advantage of The New Initiative

The Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, emphasized that implementing IPv6 in Nigeria would require minimal investment.

Citing research from the global consultancy firm Roland Berger, Inuwa noted that the adoption of IPv6 could open up a $10 trillion global market.

He said, “In order to unleash Nigeria’s digital infrastructure potential, accelerate IP network evolution and monetisation. Also, to boost new business growth for operators and enterprises in Nigeria, Nigeria IPv6-Driven Digital Infrastructure Summit, with the theme of ‘Bring Net5.5G into Reality, Inspire New Growth’, brings together government regulators.”

“It also brings leading operators and enterprise, industry organizations and university research institutes for in-depth discussion on global IP industry trends, successful IP based business practices and the advanced IP technical innovations.”
