MTN Group’s subscriber base grew by 4.7%, reaching a total of 296.8 million people using its services across 16 countries in Africa by the end of March 2025. This means more and more people are choosing MTN for their mobile and internet needs.
Along with this growth in subscribers, MTN also saw its operating profit increase by 5.3%. This profit is measured before things like taxes and depreciation, showing that the company is running its business more efficiently and making more money from its operations.

MTN’s service revenue, which is the money it earns from its telecom services, went up by nearly 20%. This was especially strong in important markets like Nigeria and Ghana. The company also invested a lot of money-about R7.5 billion-into improving its networks and platforms to keep up with the growing demand and to offer better services to customers.
Data usage is a big part of MTN’s business, and it’s growing fast. Data revenue increased by almost 18%, and the number of people actively using data services went up by 9.1%, reaching 161.7 million users. People are using more internet on their phones, and data traffic jumped by over 30%, which means more videos, social media, and apps are being used on MTN’s network. MTN’s mobile money service, called MTN MoMo, also did well, with its revenue growing by 17.2% and monthly users increasing slightly to 62.2 million.
Looking closer at Nigeria, MTN had a big turnaround. The company made a profit of ₦133.7 billion (about $103 million) in the first quarter, after losing a lot of money the same time last year. The number of subscribers in Nigeria stayed strong at over 84 million, and active data users grew by 13%. Nigeria’s service revenue jumped by 40.5%, helped by price increases and less loss from currency changes. The company’s profit and earnings before interest and taxes also went up a lot, showing that MTN Nigeria is getting back on track.

In South Africa, MTN’s other big market, the company faced tough competition but still grew its subscriber base by 5.6% to 39.2 million. More people signed up for post-paid plans, which include both voice and data services. Data revenue went up by 3.9%, and data traffic increased by 19.3%. However, voice revenue dropped a little because of the competitive market.
MTN Group’s subscribers growth and profits shows that the company is doing well in Africa’s telecom market. By investing in better networks and focusing on digital services like mobile money, MTN is keeping its position as a leading telecom provider on the continent. More people are using MTN’s services every day, and the company is making good progress in offering better connections and new digital products to its customers.
