MTN Group’s board announced support for its CEO, Ralph Mupita. This comes after an investigation was done by an independent law firm.

The firm tapped to look into allegations of favoritism raised against the African wireless carrier’s CEO.

Note, Mupita was accused of having a close relationship with a top female group executive, which was at the heart of the issue.

According to the accusers, he dished out favors to her and had allegedly tried to illegally usurp some of their executive responsibilities and give them to the executive.

However, the independent law firm found him innocent.

MTN, in defense of its CEO, stated, “MTN has noted the media reporting in the past few days regarding allegations of complaints against members of the group’s executive.”

“Also, MTN shareholders are advised that the group board held a special meeting on Wednesday, 4 September, to deliberate on a report by an independent law firm, assisted by counsel, tasked to verify allegations contained in an anonymous complaint against members of the MTN executive.”

The company went on to say, “The independent report stated that attempts to engage with the complainant were unsuccessful. It also found that there was no evidence of improper conduct by those cited in the complaint.”

Additionally, Mupita assured the public and the employees about their concerns.

Earlier this week, he sent a letter to staff assuring them that MTN has governance processes in place to address employee matters, including those concerning senior leadership.

According to Bloomberg, the letter read: “The group board is going through the necessary processes to understand the matters and will address them.”

Mupita has been Group CEO at MTN since September 2020 when he moved from CFO to CEO. He took over from Rob Shuter, who decided not to renew his contract with the operator after almost four years as CEO.

Additionally, Mupita joined MTN in April 2017 as Group CFO, and before that spent five years as the CEO of Old Mutual Emerging Markets.
