M-Pesa, the popular mobile money service run by Vodacom and Safaricom, has just hit a huge milestone. In the financial year that ended in March 2025, M-Pesa surpassed $450 billion in total transaction value. This means people used M-Pesa to send, receive, and pay over $450 billion in money during the year. It shows just how important M-Pesa has become in Africa’s growing financial technology world.
Vodacom shared that M-Pesa’s total transaction value grew by 18.3% compared to the previous year. This big jump means more people are using M-Pesa for all kinds of financial activities like paying bills, saving money, borrowing loans, and shopping. The money made from these financial services also went up by 17.6%, making up about 11.6% of Vodacom’s total service income. This tells us that M-Pesa is not just popular but also a major part of Vodacom’s business success.
M-Pesa started in Kenya back in 2007 and has since become one of Africa’s most successful mobile payment services. Today, it serves over 50 million customers across seven countries. What makes M-Pesa special is how it helps people who don’t have bank accounts to easily manage their money using just a phone. This has made life easier for millions who didn’t have access to traditional banking before.
Shameel Joosub, the CEO of Vodacom Group, said M-Pesa is still Africa’s biggest mobile money platform. He pointed out that in Ethiopia, the number of M-Pesa users more than doubled to 8.8 million. Revenue from services in Ethiopia also grew by almost 239% in local currency. Since Ethiopia is the second most populated country in Africa, it’s a very important market for M-Pesa’s future growth.
Vodacom’s other countries like Tanzania, Lesotho, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of Congo also showed good progress. Tanzania did especially well, with a 20.5% increase in service revenue and a 25.2% rise in profits before costs. Lesotho and DRC also saw steady growth. Vodacom is hopeful that Mozambique will recover soon and continues to support communities in areas affected by challenges.
Over the last five years, Vodacom has grown a lot. The total number of people using its networks went from 115.5 million in 2020 to 211.3 million in 2025. At the same time, the number of people using financial services like M-Pesa rose from 53.2 million to 87.7 million. This shows how more and more people are relying on mobile money for their daily lives.

Looking ahead, Vodacom wants to keep growing. Their goal is to have 260 million customers and 120 million financial services users by 2030. They also want to make more money from services other than just mobile phone calls and data. Right now, those other services make up 21% of their income, but they want to increase that to 30%. Vodacom plans to grow its revenue and profits by double digits in the coming years as part of their Vision 2030 plan.
M-Pesa surpassing $450 billion in total transaction value is a big deal. It shows how much people trust and use the service every day. With millions of users and growing markets, M-Pesa is helping change how people in Africa handle money, making life easier and more connected for many. The future looks bright for M-Pesa as it continues to grow and help more people across the continent.
