M-KOPA Releases $1.6 Billion in Credit to Support Kenyans

M-KOPA has announced a huge milestone by releasing $1.6 billion in credit to support Kenyans. This is a big deal because since 2010, M-KOPA Kenya has unlocked over $1.593 billion (that’s about KES 207 billion) in formal credit, making life easier for many people who didn’t have access to traditional loans. This shows how M-KOPA is really pushing financial inclusion in communities that often get left behind.

Their latest Impact Report reveals that around 4.9 million people have benefited from M-KOPA’s pay-as-you-go financing system. Out of these users, 4.5 million now own smartphones, and more than 2 million of them are getting a smartphone for the first time thanks to M-KOPA’s support. It’s not just about getting devices, though. The report shows that 67 percent of these users are using M-KOPA-financed products to earn a living, and over half have seen their income increase since joining the platform.

Martin Kingori, General Manager of M-KOPA Kenya, summed it up by saying Kenya is really at the heart of M-KOPA’s growth story. He highlighted that the 2025 Impact Report shows how access to fair credit, responsible lending, and smart digital tools are changing lives in a big way. What really stands out is that 9 out of 10 everyday earners say their quality of life has gotten better, and more than half are making more money now.

M-KOPA’s economic impact goes beyond just users. The company directly employs 1,320 people and supports 14,000 sales agents who help get their products to customers. In 2024 alone, they spent nearly $292 million (KES 20.3 billion) on buying from local businesses. They also paid about $29.18 million (KES 3.79 billion) in taxes that year. Plus, their assembly plant in Nairobi has made 2 million smartphones, showing they are helping build local manufacturing and encouraging recycling and sustainability.

The report doesn’t stop at finances, it also talks about M-KOPA’s green efforts. By promoting solar-powered products, using refurbished devices, and supporting electric motorbikes, they’ve helped avoid releasing 2.03 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. More than 5,000 electric motorbikes have been sold through M-KOPA, helping more people access clean and affordable transport.

In summary, M-KOPA releases $1.6 billion in credit to support Kenyans in a way that’s really changing everyday lives. Their model doesn’t just provide credit; it creates jobs, supports local businesses, boosts income, and protects the environment. This $1.6 billion milestone is a strong sign that M-KOPA is helping Kenya’s future grow stronger and greener.
