Kano emerges as Nigerian startups hub! For a long time, Lagos has been synonymous with Nigeria’s tech scene. However, a new player is rapidly emerging in the north: Kano.

Kano, the commercial capital of Northern Nigeria, has witnessed a phenomenal rise in startup activity in recent years, solidifying its position as a top hub for Nigerian startups.

This surge in Kano’s tech ecosystem can be attributed to several factors. Pioneering tech entrepreneurs and a thriving tech community have laid the groundwork for this growth.

In 2016, a group of young minds came together to establish one of the first tech incubation hubs in Kano, providing a launchpad for aspiring innovators.

This spirit of collaboration and support has fostered an environment where ideas can flourish.

Success stories have further fueled Kano’s rise as a Nigerian startups hub. In 2022, a Kano-born entrepreneur, Khalil Halilu, made waves by winning $8,000 in the mobility and smart city category at a prestigious tech competition, GITEX Pitch.

This win not only brought recognition to Kano’s talent pool but also served as an inspiration for aspiring startups.

Additionally, another northern Nigerian startup, Sudo Africa, secured a significant $3.37 million in pre-seed funding in the same year, showcasing the investor confidence Kano is attracting.

The growth trajectory is undeniable. Between 2021 and 2024, the number of tech startups in Kano has seen a staggering twelvefold increase, jumping from a mere five to a bustling community of around sixty.

This rapid expansion indicates the immense potential that Kano holds in the Nigerian tech landscape.

However, funding has traditionally been a hurdle for startups, particularly in emerging ecosystems like Kano.

Traditionally, only about 6% of tech founders from the entire northern region have access to venture capital funding.

This highlights the need for increased investment opportunities specifically targeted towards Kano’s burgeoning tech scene.

Bridging this gap will be crucial in unlocking the full potential of Kano as a Nigerian startups hub.

Addressing the Funding Challenge

Several initiatives are underway to address the funding challenge. TechTankLabs (TTLabs), a venture capital firm focused on the region, is playing a vital role in supporting startups in Northern Nigeria.

Their 2023 Northern Nigeria Tech Ecosystem report not only underlines Kano’s dominance in the region’s startup landscape but also sheds light on the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

Looking ahead, as Kano’s emerges as a Nigerian startups hub, it presents a unique opportunity for the nation’s tech landscape.

Fostering a more balanced ecosystem, where Lagos and Kano co-exist as powerhouses of innovation, will benefit the entire Nigerian tech industry.

By harnessing the talent and potential in Kano, Nigeria can position itself as a major force in the global tech arena.

The future of Kano’s tech scene is bright. With a supportive community, a growing pool of talent, and a strategic focus on overcoming funding hurdles, Kano is poised to solidify its place as a top hub for Nigerian startups for years to come.
