The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has transformed the Nigerian National Identification Number (NIN) experience by introducing a self-service portal in April 2024.
This platform of innovation allows citizens to register for their NIN and manage their details entirely online, removing the necessity for time-consuming visits to the enrollment centers.
No more standing in lines. NIMC self-service portal has a user-friendly registration process that can be accessed from any laptop or smartphone.
Simply click on “register” by visiting (https://nimc.gov.ng/) and embark on a smooth journey through the portal.
The portal itself will guide them through each step, ensuring that they have a pleasant and efficient experience.
For an individual to successfully register on the NIMC self-service portal, he/she will need to have these readily available:
A Valid Email Address: This email address will be used to set up a secure login account for the portal and receive important updates.
A Government-Issued ID: A clear scan or picture of a valid government-issued identification document, such as driver’s license, international passport, or voter’s card, is required.
Well-Lit Environment: The registration process includes a facial capture stage for user authenticity assurance. Find a well-lit area for clear and successful capture.
After the registration process, users can use their newly created email address and password to log into the NIMC self-service portal.
The system will then ask them to verify their NIN by inputting the unique eleven-digit number.
Once the verification is successful, a user will be required to do a facial capture on every subsequent login for extra security.

The NIMC self-service portal offers many functions other than just registration.
Users are able to leverage the platform in order to:
Change Personal Information: You may update information such as your name, address, phone number, or email address directly on the platform. This will eliminate the need for you to visit an enrollment center for minor changes and also speed up the process.
Correct Errors: Did you notice any errors in your NIN details during registration or data transfer? You can flag these errors and initiate correction processes conveniently through the self-service portal.
Schedule Appointments: Although the majority of changes can be done through the portal, there are a few cases that might require you to come to an enrollment center. The self-service portal allows users to schedule their own appointments at their preferred centers, which gives them a more comfortable and efficient experience when they visit in person.
Download NIN Slip: Do you require a hard copy of your NIN for verification purposes? On the portal, you can conveniently download your NIN slip and avoid having to request a reprint at an enrollment center.
The introduction of the NIMC self-service portal represents a big leap for identity management in Nigeria.
This revolutionary platform allows citizens to be in charge of their NIN information and fast-tracks the entire process.
With its user-friendly interface and all-round features, the NIMC self-service portal is positioned to bring about a paradigm shift in the way Nigerians engage with the National Identity Management System.
It’s important to remember that the NIMC self-service portal is still under development and there may be changes in functionalities.
