Google is updating its standalone Google Pay app in the US with some pretty significant changes. Google Wallet has essentially taken the place of Google Pay, so the company has announced that the Pay app will close in the US in June.
According to the company, the change is intended to make its payment apps simpler. The standalone app will only be accessible in Singapore and India after it closes in the US.
Google announced in a blog post that the Google Wallet app will continue to offer the majority of the Pay app’s most well-liked features, including configuring and monitoring a user’s payment services and tapping to make payments in physical stores that accept this feature.
According to the company, this specific app is five times more popular in the US than the Pay app, so it appears that Google is making these changes in order to get rid of an app that isn’t being used very often.
The business added, “People continue to securely store payment cards used for tap and pay in stores, along with other digital items like transit cards, driver’s licenses, state IDs, and more, in Google Wallet. Starting on June 4, 2024, the standalone Pay app for users in the United States will no longer be accessible in order to streamline the app experience.
Since Google Wallet is the go-to, single app for its payment features, it makes sense for Google to combine and streamline its payment apps, even though the move may seem abrupt. This will help users understand its services better.
The company claims that users who were able to locate offers and deals using the app can still do so by using the new deals destination on Google Search. According to the company, it will continue to enhance the Chrome browser’s ability to autofill forms when using Pay on the web. It will also increase the variety of passes that can be kept in Google Wallet, allowing passes for public transportation to be included.
With the Google Wallet app, you can pay with your phone at retail establishments, hop on an airline, take public transportation, save store loyalty cards, and use a digital key to start your car.
This action to close the app is limited to users in the United States. Google continues to support the Pay app in Singapore and India. According to Google, the Pay app will “continue to build for the unique needs in those countries” and will continue to function in those markets.
