Ghana is Now Using Zipline’s Drone Delivery Services Due to Disruptions in USAID Supply Chains

Ghana is now using Zipline’s drone delivery services to help get important medical supplies to people, especially because there have been problems with USAID supply chains. USAID is a big organization that usually helps Ghana with health supplies, but lately, many of their programs have been paused. This has made it hard for hospitals and clinics to get the medicines and tools they need.

To fix this problem quickly, the Government of Ghana teamed up with Zipline, a company that uses drones to deliver medical items. These drones fly from special hubs and can reach places that are far away or hard to get to by road. This way, health workers can get things like malaria test kits, medicines for pain and cough, and nutrition supplements without waiting too long.

Health workers are happy about this new way of getting supplies. Comfort Addai Fofie, a midwife at Jadema Health Centre in the Northeast Region, said Zipline’s deliveries have helped them do their jobs better. She explained that getting medicines on time means they can take good care of patients without worrying about running out of important items.

One good thing about this partnership is that Ghana does not have to pay extra money for each delivery. Instead, the government pays a fixed monthly fee, and Zipline can send as many deliveries as needed. This has helped Zipline increase how many flights they make from their hubs in Ghana by 20 to 50 percent in the last two months. These drones can make hundreds of trips every day, reaching many communities that usually have trouble getting medical help quickly.

Zipline started using drones to deliver medical supplies in Rwanda back in 2016. Since then, they have worked in other African countries like Nigeria, Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, and Senegal. In these places, Zipline has helped deliver vaccines and emergency medicines to people who live far from big cities.

Daniel Kwaku Merki, who leads Zipline’s work in Ghana, said this partnership is a big step for the country. He said Ghana is showing how it can use its own resources and new ideas to build a stronger health system. By working with Zipline, Ghana is making sure that even during hard times, people can still get the care they need.

Because of the problems with USAID supply chains, Ghana is now using Zipline’s drone delivery services to keep medical supplies moving. This smart solution is helping save lives and making sure no one is left without important medicines, no matter where they live.
