CAC Warns of Intensified Crackdown on Unregistered PoS Operators

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has come out with a serious warning for all Point-of-Sale (PoS) operators in Nigeria. They’re making it clear that starting January 1, 2026, any PoS operator running without proper CAC registration will no longer be allowed to do business in the country. This is part of a bigger crackdown on unregistered PoS operators, which the CAC says is getting worse.

According to a statement shared on their Instagram page, the CAC has noticed a growing number of PoS operators who haven’t completed the necessary registration steps. This kind of operation breaks the law, specifically the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Agent Banking Regulations. The Commission also pointed fingers at some fintech companies for making things worse by signing up unregistered agents, calling this practice reckless and a real threat to Nigeria’s financial system.

This crackdown on unregistered PoS operators is not just about enforcing laws; the CAC highlights that the current situation puts millions of Nigerians, including small business owners and people in rural areas, at risk of serious financial and investment harm.

The Commission said security agencies will be stepping in to make sure everyone complies. Unregistered PoS terminals will be taken offline or confiscated, and fintech companies that support these illegal operations will be put on a watchlist and reported to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The message from the CAC is clear: if you’re operating a PoS business, you need to get registered right away. Compliance is no longer optional but mandatory across the board.

Adding more weight to this issue, Olufemi Bamisile, the Chairman of the House of Representatives ad hoc committee on the economic and security effects of cryptocurrency and PoS activities, recently spoke out about the problem. He expressed concern over the rise in fraud, unlicensed crypto activities, cloned terminals, and anonymous transactions linked to unregistered PoS operators. Bamisile mentioned that poor Know-Your-Customer checks are making Nigerians vulnerable to financial loss, cybercrime, and security breaches.

This CAC warning of intensified crackdown on unregistered PoS operators shows that the government is serious about cleaning up the sector. For anyone running a PoS business or involved with fintech, it’s time to act fast and register with the CAC to avoid running into trouble once the enforcement kicks in next year.
