What is a Postal Code?

A postal code is also known as a ZIP code, and is usually shortened to “Postcode.”

It is a numeric, alphabetic or alphanumeric figure assigned to a geographical area. This serves to ease the sorting and delivery of mail.

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) assigned the general postal code for Abuja to be 900001. However, districts in the city have their own unique ZIP codes.

Why It is Important to Know Your Postal Code

With the radical growth of technology, a lot of people do not see the need for postal services anymore.

We believe that all forms of communication can, and should be, carried out through a digital device.

However, this is not so. A lot of big corporations are going back to traditional mail, due to studies indicating its effectiveness.

One such study, as conducted by Litmus, revealed that only 21% of emails worldwide are opened and only 29% are retained. The others are deleted within two seconds of being opened.

On the other hand, physical mail comes with a sense of seriousness and urgency, causing customers to open it and take action. This is the logic behind sending bills and invoices by post in the United States, to date.

On forms and applications, one of the most common basic information that is still required to date is one’s postal code.

It is likely that within the next few years, corporations in Nigeria too will begin to send more physical mail to customers.

NIPOST keeps putting remarkable effort into improving the Nigerian postal system, and this has spurred some change.

Aside from helping with mail sorting, Zip codes also serve the following functions:

  • Postal codes ensure that e-commerce sites and online vendors get the accurate address of a customer when delivering their goods or services.
  • Zip codes facilitate statistical analyses for developmental works.
