Yango, a popular ride-hailing and food delivery app, has teamed up with Flutterwave to let customers in Zambia pay for rides and deliveries using bank cards. This new feature went live today, ending the need for cash payments in many cases. Now, users can simply add their credit or debit cards to the Yango app and pay right inside the platform, without any hassle.
Before this update, most people in Zambia paid for taxi rides or food orders with cash or mobile money. Yango competes with big names like Uber and Bolt in the country, offering both taxi services and quick food deliveries. The company belongs to the Yango Group, which runs similar apps in many emerging markets around the world. This partnership makes Flutterwave the main handler for all card payments on Yango’s platform in Zambia.

Cash is still king in Zambia for daily needs like taxis and meals. While mobile money works on many apps, card payments have not caught on much. This is because of problems like weak internet, worries about security, and tricky currency issues. Flutterwave, a top Nigerian payment company known across Africa, fixes these headaches. Their system is strong against fraud and works well even when connections are spotty. It handles everything smoothly in places where digital money is still growing.

For Yango users, this means easier payments. People who like using cards no longer have to carry cash or switch apps for bank transfers. It’s a big win for tourists and expats too. They often have international cards but no local mobile money accounts. Now, they can jump in and use Yango without worry.
The good news doesn’t stop with customers. Restaurants and drivers on Yango also gain a lot. Instead of dealing with piles of cash after a busy day, they get digital payments that settle quickly. This cuts down on mistakes during money counting and lowers risks like theft or loss. Faster payouts mean drivers can focus on more trips, and restaurants can track sales better.
Kabanda Chewe, Yango’s Country Head in Zambia, is excited about the change. He says it boosts the app’s payment options and helps push Zambia toward more digital shopping. “This is an important step in improving the overall experience for customers and helping restaurants grow through reliable digital transactions,” Chewe explained.

Iyembi Nkanza, Flutterwave’s Country Head, sees it as part of a bigger plan. “We’re empowering Zambians with secure, convenient payment options that remove friction from everyday transactions,” she said. Flutterwave wants to make payments simple everywhere in Africa.
Zambia is seeing a boom in digital services. More people order food online or shop from home, but payments have lagged behind. This deal proves payment firms are investing here as online buying grows. It shows trust in Zambia’s future for tech.
Yango plans to add even more payment choices and features soon. Their aim is a full “connected service ecosystem” where everything links up smoothly. Right now, they focus on getting users to switch from cash to digital options. With secure cards now available, more Zambians can enjoy cashless rides and deliveries every day. This step makes life easier and safer for everyone involved.
