Luno has made this possible by expanding Luno Pay, which now works at nearly 700,000 retail outlets across South Africa using something called Scan to Pay. When you want to pay, you just scan a QR code with the Luno app, pick Bitcoin or Tether, and approve the payment. MoneyBadger helps shops accept crypto payments without needing to change their current payment systems. Since Luno Pay launched in November 2024, more than 48,000 payments have been made with a total of over R28 million spent at over 1,600 shops. This shows a big shift in South Africa—more people are now using Bitcoin and crypto as money to buy things, not just as a way to save or invest. In fact, about 70% of users keep coming back to use it again, which is a strong sign that crypto is becoming part of daily life.
By joining Luno Pay’s 30,000 stores with Scan to Pay’s 650,000 stores, South African users to spend crypto at major retail stores has become possible almost everywhere. This makes digital money payments much more common and easier to use nationwide.
