Meanwhile, Safaricom Ethiopia and Kenya took first place in their home countries.

Shifting to their business side, Vodacom Group put up strong numbers in 2025. In their half-year results up to September 30, headline earnings per share jumped 32.3% to 467 cents, or about $0.25. Revenue climbed 10.9% to R81.6 billion ($4.4 billion), and even better, normalized growth was 12.1% once you strip out currency swings. EBITDA rose 14.7% to R30.5 billion ($1.6 billion), with margins holding steady or improving in most spots.

In their biggest market, South Africa, service revenue grew 2.2% to R31.7 billion ($1.7 billion). Overseas operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Mozambique, and Tanzania did even better, up 13.3% in local currency terms to R16.7 billion ($900 million).

One of the year’s big moves? They’re pushing to buy more of Safaricom. The plan is to snap up 15% of the Kenyan government’s shares, worth $1.6 billion (KSh 204.3 billion). That would lift Vodacom’s ownership from 40% to 55%. Recently, Kenya kicked off the sale process, expecting to pocket around $1.6 billion, or up to $1.9 billion (KES 244.5 billion) with dividends factored in. It’s a smart play that strengthens their foothold in one of Africa’s hottest telecom markets.
