Steve Ballmer, the former CEO of Microsoft, has surpassed Bill Gates in wealth, becoming the sixth-richest person in the world.
This milestone marks the first time Ballmer’s net worth has exceeded that of Gates, his former colleague and the co-founder of Microsoft.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Ballmer’s net worth has soared to $157.2 billion, while Gates’ fortune stands at $156.7 billion.
This shift in their financial standings is largely attributed to Microsoft’s success in the artificial intelligence sector, which has propelled the company’s market capitalization to $3.3 trillion.
Microsoft’s shares have seen a 21% increase this year alone, contributing significantly to Ballmer’s wealth.
More than 90% of Ballmer’s wealth is tied to his Microsoft shares, making him the company’s largest individual shareholder.
He holds an estimated 333.25 million shares, or about 4% of the company.
Ballmer’s journey at Microsoft began in 1980 when he joined as the 30th employee, eventually becoming CEO in 2000 and serving until his retirement in 2014.
In contrast, Gates has diversified his investments through Cascade Investment, his holding company with diverse interests across various industries.
About half of his wealth is held through Cascade, which was created with the proceeds of Microsoft stock sales and dividends.
Gates also owns a $21 billion stake in waste management company Republic Services through Cascade.
However, Gates’ net worth has been impacted by his substantial charitable contributions through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the world’s largest charitable organizations.
Along with his ex-wife Melinda French Gates and friend Warren Buffett, Gates has funneled billions of dollars of his personal money to build up the $75 billion foundation.
Since starting the foundation more than two decades ago, Gates and his former wife have given almost $60 billion from their personal fortunes.

While Ballmer has not signed the Giving Pledge, an organization that encourages the world’s richest people to give away the majority of their fortunes, he has his own philanthropic work through the Ballmer Group.
This foundation aims to bolster economic opportunities for children and families in the United States. Additionally, Ballmer has made notable donations to educational institutions.
The shift in wealth between Ballmer and Gates highlights the changing dynamics in the tech industry and the impact of strategic investments in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.
As Microsoft continues to thrive under CEO Satya Nadella’s leadership, Ballmer’s stake in the company has proven to be a significant asset, propelling him to the upper echelons of global wealth.
