Paystack and FAAN Launch Tap and Pay Card for Payments at Lagos, Abuja Airports

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the fintech company Paystack have come together to make paying at airports much easier and faster. On August 28, 2025, they launched a new tap and pay card for payments at Lagos and Abuja airports. This new way of paying, called the FAAN Prepaid NFC Card, helps drivers quickly pay airport access fees without having to use cash. The plan is to roll out this tap and pay card for payments at all airports managed by FAAN across Nigeria by the end of 2025.

With this new system, when a driver arrives at the airport gate, the Paystack terminal will show how much they need to pay based on their vehicle type. Instead of fumbling for cash or waiting in long lines, the driver just taps the FAAN Prepaid NFC Card on the terminal. Payment is made instantly, no PIN is needed, and the gate barrier opens within seconds. This tap and pay card is powered by Paystack, which makes sure that all payments are safe and quick. This setup is perfect for busy airports and helps reduce long wait times during peak travel periods.

Drivers can easily get this card from the FAAN terminals in Lagos or Abuja. To activate the card, they just visit the FAAN cashless payment website or scan a QR code on the card, enter their name and phone number, confirm their ID with a one-time password, and then add at least ₦1,000 to a virtual account. Once registered, the card can be used at any airport gate powered by FAAN and Paystack’s system.

Paystack and FAAN Launch Tap and Pay Card for Payments at Airports

The launch of this tap and pay card is part of Nigeria’s growing move towards cashless payments. It follows similar efforts like the Cowry card used for Lagos public transport, which has been popular since 2021. The partnership between Paystack and FAAN helps make sure that airport fees are calculated correctly and paid safely, making the whole process smoother for everyone. This new tap and pay card will help prevent delays and make the airport experience better for travelers.

This new payment system also comes as part of bigger improvements at Nigerian airports led by Olubunmi Kuku, who became FAAN’s Managing Director in 2023. When she took over, many airports in Nigeria were old and had problems like lost revenue and long delays. But since then, Kuku has been working hard to modernize the airports and make things better for passengers.

For example, the Lagos Murtala Muhammed International Airport has seen runway and taxiway repairs, new lighting for day and night flights, and bigger terminals to handle more passengers. Other airports across Nigeria have had upgrades to parking lots, lighting, cooling, and power systems, making travel safer and more comfortable. Security has also improved with modern X-ray machines, more CCTV cameras, and thousands of radios for security staff. These changes have been praised by international aviation experts who say that passenger screening is now much faster, especially at busy times.

Thanks to these changes and new technology like the Paystack tap and pay card, FAAN’s finances have improved a lot. In 2023, the revenue went up by over 80%, reaching nearly ₦344 billion. They have also been able to recover money owed and are using better software to manage money. The tap and pay card helps by making payments automatic and reducing the problems that come with cash.

FAAN is also focusing on passenger comfort. They have upgraded lounges, created special spaces for elderly and nursing mothers, and made airports easier to use for people with disabilities. They have also introduced faster screening and boarding times, full refunds for canceled flights, and special hotlines for passengers with disabilities. This shows how much FAAN cares about travelers’ needs.

Another important part of the improvements is taking care of the airport staff. Many employees now receive better wages, and thousands have been trained to improve their skills. FAAN has also set up a system to track how well staff are doing, making sure they work hard to make airports better for everyone.

The Paystack and FAAN launch of the tap and pay card for payments is a big step forward for Nigeria’s airports. By using smart technology, they have made paying airport fees faster, safer, and easier. This new system will make traveling through Nigerian airports a more modern and enjoyable experience, showing that our airports are ready for the future. Paystack and FAAN have truly shown how to bring better service to the people using our airports every day.
