Nigeria Faces 4,701 Weekly Cyberattacks, Tops Africa in Threats

Nigeria now faces the highest number of cyberattacks in Africa. Organizations in the country deal with 4,701 attacks every week. This makes Nigeria number one on the continent for cyber threats. The news comes from the latest Global Threat Intelligence report by Check Point Research. They released it yesterday.

The number shows a big jump. It is 12 percent higher than the same time last year. In December 2025, Nigeria saw 4,622 weekly attacks. Now, it has grown to 4,701. This rise means attackers are not slowing down. They seem to find Nigeria a key target worth exploring.

Nigeria stands out among four African countries in the report. It beats the African average by a lot. Across Africa, organizations face 2,864 attacks per week on average. Nigeria’s number is much higher than that.

Nigeria Faces 4,701 Weekly Cyberattacks

Globally, things are also getting worse. Organizations around the world saw an average of 2,090 cyberattacks per week in January. This is up 3 percent from December. Compared to last year, it is a 17 percent increase. Cyber threats are growing everywhere, not just in Africa.

The report gives clear details on African countries. Nigeria tops the list with 4,701 attacks per organization each week. That is the 12 percent year-on-year rise from 4,622 in December 2025.

Angola comes second with 4,512 attacks per week. But this is down 7 percent from last year.

Kenya has 2,172 weekly attacks. This is a big drop of 41 percent year on year.

South Africa faces 2,145 attacks per week. This is up 36 percent from the same time last year.

Africa as a whole saw 2,864 attacks per organization weekly. This is a 6 percent decline from last year. But the average hides big differences between countries. Nigeria and South Africa both saw attacks go up. Angola and Kenya saw them drop.

Ian van Rensburg is the Head of Security Engineering for Africa at Check Point Software Technologies. He warns that these numbers show changes in cyber threats. The scale is bigger now. The attacks are also more clever and advanced.

Why is Nigeria facing so many attacks? The report points to its top position in attack volume. Attackers see value in targeting Nigerian organizations. This could be due to the growth in digital services, banking, and tech in the country. As Nigeria leads in fintech and online business, it draws more hackers.

Organizations need to act fast. Simple steps like strong passwords, regular software updates, and employee training can help. Firewalls and antivirus tools are key too. Check Point urges businesses to stay alert and use better security.

This report is a wake-up call for Nigeria and Africa. Cyber threats are rising fast. Countries like Nigeria must invest more in defense. Governments and companies should work together to fight back.

The global rise shows no one is safe. Everyone from small shops to big banks faces risks. Staying safe online is now a daily need.

As attacks grow in number and skill, Nigeria leads Africa but not in a good way. Leaders must respond to protect the digital future.
